Crete`s Akti Apollonia resort has attracted an EU Blue Flag<.> which recognises the cleanliness of its beach. It is the 10th Blue Flag awarded to the hotel and one of four the Gazio municipality received this year. The other three went to beaches operated by the hotels Agapi Beach, Candia Maris and Fodele Beach.

Akti Apollonia director Manolis Manousos said that he hoped other hotels would follow their example and also be awarded Blue Flags in future.

EU Blue Flags are handed out each year to beaches and marinas which satsify strict criterion on quality of swimming water, organisation, bathers` safety, information and environmental education.

Greece, particularly, has proven a star of the programme after having begun with six flags for beaches in 1987 and now 319 flags for beaches and eight for marinas in 2000.

In Greece, the programme is coordinated by the Athens-based Association for the Protection of Nature.
