Customer Alliance City Report 2020: Understanding the COVID-19 development based on a global comparison of hotel reviews

In Europe, Rome was the first city to experience a drop in reviews in January 2020. In general, the review volume among the compared European cities went down simultaneously.

BERLIN: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is hitting the global economy tremendously. To understand the development of the pandemic and to make assumptions for recovery, the B2B software provider Customer Alliance analyzed 18 million online hotel reviews in 16 metropolises in Europe, America and Asia, and compared them with the previous year.

In contrast to widely used health indicators like new daily cases, the Berlin based company evaluated the number of guest reviews across the globe to get an indirect indicator for the development of the economic situation. The reviews have been pulled from leading review portals such as booking.com, TripAdvisor and Google as well as renown country-specific review platforms. Which cities were affected when and which markets start to recover already? Analyzing and updating these numbers regularly, readers of the report will be able to assess when the hotel markets start to wake up.

With the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 in Wuhan in December 2019, the capital of Hubei province in China, the Chinese market was affected first. The lowest number of local reviews has been reached in calendar week 7. Now, the Chinese domestic travel market shows signs of recovery. Shanghai is the first city to see a significant increase in reviews in calendar week 17.

In Europe, Rome was the first city to experience a drop in reviews in January 2020. In general, the review volume among the compared European cities went down simultaneously. However, Vienna experienced a major drop from a plus of 47.2% reviews in February 2020 (compared to 2019) to -40.5% within a month. In April 2020, Rome showed the lowest number of reviews with -99.5% compared to the other European cities.
