Design refresh of the Berkshires’ Seven Hills blends Gilded Age legacy with boutique hotel style

Seven Hills, Queen Room.

Storied 57-room mansion to introduce renovation results, along with a new breakfast program, in March.

LENOX, MASS. -As the final touches are put on Seven Hills’ renovation early this spring, one of the Berkshires’ most storied inns is entering a new era as a stylish boutique hotel – one with its 1911 Gilded Age legacy intact. Under the direction of its owner, The Wardman Group, and Scout Hotel & Resort Management, which was brought on to operate the 57-room hotel last June, the renovation is slated for completion in March.

Miami-based Bigtime Design Studios created a stylish blend of old and new design elements for Seven Hills, which, thanks to a long association with nearby Tanglewood Music Center, has played host to luminaries from Leonard Bernstein to Dave Brubeck. The fresh design promises to appeal both to returning guests and a new generation of Berkshires visitors drawn to the region’s year-round attractions.

The property is wrapping its head-to-toe renovations, including updated exteriors and landscaping, enhanced swimming pool area, new furnishings and textiles, new guest bathrooms, and fully renovated common areas.  The two main meeting rooms are being outfitted to accommodate small meetings and corporate retreats in addition to weddings and social events.

Public spaces feature a scheme of gray, slate and deep royal blue with amethyst accents and handsome wood floors. Groupings of couches and chairs in a mix of velvet and leather upholstery create inviting areas for relaxing and socializing. The antique millwork pieces and furnishings of the Spencer Room (formerly the Parlor) remain alongside more contemporary furniture selections to broaden the appeal of the hotel.

In the guest rooms, muted tones of charcoal and blue are accented with lively touches of mustard. Sleek, upholstered headboards frame beds draped in a down-alternative blanket and topped with a decorative sheet and yellow bolster pillow. New baths feature showers or tub-shower combinations, marble-topped sinks with dark wood bases, and classic hexagon and subway tiles. The new one-bedroom presidential suite features a separate soaker tub and rain shower and is an ideal choice for the many couples who wed at Seven Hills every year.

Also this spring, Seven Hills is introducing a small, well-thought-out food and beverage service, including a light dinner and bar menu of drinks, small bites, and bar snacks. Breakfast items provide morning fuel for guests before they set out for a day of adventure or convene for a productive meeting. They’ll find Seven Hills’ Lenox setting convenient to a wealth of nearby attractions from galleries, museums and performing arts centers to antiquing along Route 7’s “Antiques Alley.” There are excellent restaurants and cafes, thanks to a strong farm-to-table culture, and outdoor pursuits range from downhill and cross-country skiing in winter to hiking and biking in summer.

Seven Hills’ roots extend back to the 18th century as a modest farmhouse, which was expanded in 1885 by Robert Chapin to become Norwood, the first of the Berkshire Cottages. Celebrated author and socialite Edith Wharton built her own mansion, The Mount, next door. In 1911, Bostonian Emily Spencer undertook an extensive renovation that doubled its size and gave it the name Shipton Court. The mansion was converted to an inn and given its current name in 1951, and it has catered to the international performers and music-loving audiences of Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, ever since.
