Elsewhere in Europe, hotel prices have increased by an average of 8 per cent in comparison to last month. According to the tHPI based on the 50 most popular European cities on trivago, one night in March will cost an average of £93, compared to £86 in February.
Hotel prices in Dublin have increased by up to 173 per cent this St Patrick’s Day, according to the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) reported monthly by hotel search website trivago.co.uk. Although St Patrick’s Day fell on Sunday 17th March, the most expensive day to book is Saturday 16th March. One night cost an average of £248, which is a 173 per cent increase from the monthly average of £91. There is only 9 per cent availability remaining in Dublin the weekend of St Patrick’s Day (Friday 15th to Monday 18th March).
According to searches on trivago, 55 per cent of visitors to Dublin travelled from Ireland, 24 per cent from the UK, 6 per cent from Germany and 4 per cent from Italy. Dublin hotel prices have also increased the weekend before St Patrick’s Day (Friday 8th and Saturday 9th March). One night cost an average of £154, which is a 69 per cent increase from the monthly average of £91.
European Hotel Prices: 39% Increase Compared to February
Elsewhere in Europe, hotel prices have increased by an average of 8 per cent in comparison to last month. According to the tHPI based on the 50 most popular European cities on trivago, one night in March will cost an average of £93, compared to £86 in February.
The most significant increases can be found in Spanish and Italian destinations promising slightly warmer temperatures this month. Popular Easter sun destinations include Italy’s Rome (up 33 per cent in comparison to February to an average of £109 per night) and Florence (up 24 per cent to £102). The most significant increases in Spain can be found in Seville (up 39 per cent to £82 per night), Valencia (up 22 per cent to £77), Malaga (up 21 per cent to £69) and Granada (up 20 per cent to £66). Istanbul, usually a cheaper destination, has increased by 37 per cent this month to an average of £107 per night.
Easter Hotel Prices: Three Star Versus Four Star
Those looking for a deal this Easter may want to consider Barcelona, where prices have decreased by 6 per cent to an average of £97 per night. When comparing three star to four star hotel prices over the Easter weekend (Friday 29th March to Monday 1st April), Dresden in Germany offers the best four star hotel deals. Four star hotels in Dresden are on average 13 per cent cheaper than three star hotels (£79 compared to £91 per night).
Other Easter deals can be found in Valencia, where four star hotels are on average 10 per cent cheaper than three star hotels (£66 compared to £74 per night). Bilbao, Cologne and Madrid should also be considered for cheap four star hotels (£75, £76 and £91 per night, respectively).
Those looking for four star Easter deals should avoid Venice, where four star hotels are on average 72 per cent more expensive than three star hotels over the Easter weekend (£307 compared to £179 per night). Four star hotels in Paris are on average 38 per cent more expensive than three star hotels (£196 compared to £142 per night), and four star hotels in London 35 per cent more expensive (£149 compared to £110).
UK Hotel Prices
Compared to February, the only UK destination showing a significant increase is Brighton. Hotel prices in Brighton have increased by an average of 6 per cent, from £85 per night in February to £90 in March. Elsewhere in the UK hotel prices have decreased: in Birmingham one night in March will cost an average of £73 (8 per cent decrease compared to February), in Sheffield £66 (6 per cent decrease) and in Cardiff £78 (5 per cent decrease).
In comparison to this time last year, hotel prices have fallen across the UK. The most significant decreases can be found in Brighton (down 12 per cent to an average of £90 per night), Glasgow (down 8 per cent to £72) and Cardiff (down 6 per cent to £78). This suggests hotel prices in general are decreasing across the UK.
