Fairmont San Jose attains leadership status California Green Lodging program

The California Department of General Services Green Lodging program has awarded The Fairmont San Jose Leadership Level status.

SAN JOSE – The California Department of General Services Green Lodging program has awarded The Fairmont San Jose Leadership Level status. One of the resort’s commended initiatives recognized by the Green Lodging Program is their participation and leadership in the City of San Jose’s enhanced recycling program.  Further improving upon an already top-notch city-wide recycling program, (for more than a decade, San Jose has had one of the best recycling rates in the nation, with an overall landfill diversion rate of 62%), the hotel now “sorts” for both recyclable and compostable materials.  With an impressive 100% (hotel) colleague participation, the iconic property has realized an impressive 40% savings in waste expenditures.

The California Green Lodging Program acknowledges and promotes lodging facilities that demonstrate water and energy conservation, waste minimization, recycling, environmentally friendly purchasing, program sustainability, and pollution prevention.

California is recognized throughout the nation for its environmental beauty and its environmental leadership. Every resident and business in the Golden State has an important role to play in protecting this beauty and helping to conserve California’s precious natural resources to ensure that its residents and businesses continue to thrive.

“We are exceptionally proud to add this designation to our list of accolades,” shares Kelley Cosgrove, General Manager at The Fairmont San Jose. “Our commitment to environmental stewardship provides a framework for our eco-friendly hotel to meet and exceed guest expectations of operational sustainability. Over a century ago Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was founded on an enduring connection to the land, communities and people where we do business.  Energizing our commitment to ‘think globally and act locally’, we are proud to support hotel-based environmental initiatives that encourage partnerships and learning while addressing a universal environmental issue in a way that hits close to home.”

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is a leader in sustainable tourism and was the first major hotel chain in North America to embrace environmental stewardship in its daily operations through the implementation of its own Green Partnership Program.
