Historic Galleria Park Hotel unveils new look after multimillion-dollar renovation

SAN FRANSISCO – Galleria Park Hotel, a Joie de Vivre property located in San Francisco’s Financial District, reveals a multimillion-dollar renovation and redesign to its entrance, lobby, and mezzanine. A phased renovation helmed by San Francisco-based interior design firm BAMO, all 177 guest rooms, including eight suites, were completed in 2017. An architectural landmark with origins dating back to the early 1900s, the updated hotel draws inspiration from its storied history, preserving timeless, deep-rooted architectural features while embracing modern aesthetics that enhance the guest experience.

The new entryway, highlighted by marble tile flooring, opens into an expansive, two-story lobby area, inclusive of a mezzanine. The lobby’s soft, cream walls are accented with antiqued mirrors and colorful abstract artwork, in addition to plush furnishings and bold carpeting in rich tones of charcoal and brandy. The newly activated mezzanine invites guests to enjoy cocktails and bites from Gaspar Brasserie, while the lobby’s lounge seating creates an inviting space that promotes socialization among guests. In addition, the hotel will now host a Martini Hour – a nod to the property’s historic role in the birth of the classic cocktail.

Over the years, our guests have expressed a desire for a casual common area where they can enjoy cocktails,” says General Manager Suzie Yang. “We saw this renovation as the perfect opportunity to create a new experience out of the existing mezzanine, offering our guests the freedom to enjoy the vibrancy of the lobby from a contemporary and intimate space.”

Galleria Park Hotel’s initial renovations in this phased project included all 177 guest rooms, as well as meeting and event spaces. Featuring custom furnishings, a palette of fresh neutrals and eclectic accents, the guest rooms are outfitted with marble-topped desks and “splattered” antique mirrored surfaces, creating a classic yet modern ambiance. Additional highlights include small-scale irregular dot wallpaper, carpeting in warm tones, warm wood venetian blinds, and one of two headboards: roll-tufted or cocooned Hollywood wrap-around styles, both in a rich, silvered gray. The event spaces feature neutral walls and carpeting in lush blues and greys, creating an inviting space for guests to meet and brainstorm.

A local staple in San Francisco’s hospitality scene dating back over a century, Galleria Park Hotel is built upon the site of the former Occidental Hotel and Lick House, hailed as two of the West Coast’s most luxurious hotels in the late 1800s, and arguably home to the birth of the Martini cocktail. After a major earthquake and fire destroyed the properties in 1906, the site was rebuilt in 1911 as The Hotel Sutter, offsetting the stage for the modern-day hotel. In the 1920s, the site was home to a lavish speakeasy, remnants of which can be found in the current garage. The property was renamed Galleria Park Hotel in the 1980s. It was acquired by Joie de Vivre in 2007.
