Hospitality industry ratifies commitment to sustainable design

Futuregreen: building hotels local, architects & designers committing to strengthen America's economy.

Banding together to create a new standard for hotel design, leaders at the Futuregreen Hospitality Forum have signed a statement that outlines a series of sustainable goals, specifically a renewed emphasis on using goods made regionally (within 500 miles of the project site).

In an effort to act together to positively impact the physical and social environment, the commitment unifies changemakers in the industry. Futuregreen board of directors made up of representatives from top architecture and interior design firms, including Gensler, Wimberly Interiors, HBA, Clodagh Design, ForrestPerkins and Studio 3877, are together responsible for product decisions totaling more than $9B in value. The forum was initiated and led by Michael Suomi, Principal/VP Design, Stonehill & Taylor, and Cindy Allen, Editor in Chief, Interior Design Magazine.

“At a time when politicians on both sides of the political spectrum, communities around the country, academia and the manufacturing industry are all discussing a need to bring jobs back home, we wanted to do our part in having a realistic discussion about how domestic manufacturing could impact our industry,” said Michael Suomi, Stonehill & Taylor, and co-founder of Futuregreen.

The commitment details a pledge to support manufacturers in the U.S. when working on U.S. based projects, and encourages the recognition of a newly formed Futuregreen Seal for interior design products that meet sustainable requirements.

The document is the result of the inaugural Futuregreen Hospitality Forum, held in New York in June 2012. The full-day event brought together hotel brands and owners, hospitality design firms, procurement companies, and manufacturers serving the hospitality sector to ask: what can we do now to create a better future in 15 years?

“Futuregreen focused on meaningful, sustainable answers for today and the future,” said Cindy Allen, Interior Design, also a founder of the forum. “Based on attendance, tremendous energy and feedback, and overall goodwill, we believe this inaugural event was a path in the right direction for the industry.”

The Futuregreen Forum will meet on May 31, 2013 in New York to self-report on their progress implementing the commitment, a refinement of initiatives and best practices.
