Hotel prices jump 39% following SFO crash

San Francisco hotel prices shoot up 39% after plane crash at SFO; Hotel prices down 13-18% this month percent in popular East Coast cities.


San Francisco sees 39% hotel price increase after plane crash at SFO

Following the fatal crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 at SFO on Saturday, hotels filled up fast with stranded travelers. On the following Sunday, a hotel room in San Francisco cost an average $221. Hotel prices grew a dramatic 39 percent to $307 on Monday, and continued to grow on Tuesday ($338) and Wednesday ($342), but cooled off again on Thursday, July 11th, with an average of $261 per night.

Hotel prices down this year across North America, Hawaii an exception
The average price for a standard double room in the US is $180 this month, down 4 percent from last July. Average hotel prices decreased in all but 9 out of 50 states in the US, in comparison to last year’s July prices. Wyoming saw the most dramatic annual price drop (down 14 percent, at $193). Prices also decreased in 9 out of 10 Canadian provinces in the past year. Good news for Hawaii tourism—the strongest yearly increase was present in the Aloha state, where the average hotel price rose to $271 (up 8 percent from last year).

July a great time to visit East Coast cities
Of the top 25 US cities examined by the trivago Hotel Price Index, all but 7 saw a decrease this month, in comparison to last month. The best hotel deals can be found on the East Coast and in the Midwest, where temperatures heat up and prices cool down. Especially good hotel deals can be found in Chicago this month, where hotel rates have dropped 27 percent to $234 (from $320 in June 2013). Those travelers heading to New York in July ($302) will see an 18 percent savings from last month ($367). Other East Coast cities with July hotel savings are Philadelphia ($176, down 16 percent), Boston ($284, down 13 percent), and Washington D.C.  ($238, down 13 percent).

41 of top 50 European cities reduce rates this month
European hotel prices fall 10 percent this month in comparison to last month, at $146, down from $163. Lower hotel prices were found in 41 of the 50 European cities listed in tHPI. In light of civil unrest, Istanbul hotel prices decrease a further 25 percent this month ($142) from last month ($190) and a 20 percent decrease over the year (July 2012: $178).

In addition to Lisbon ($128, down 28 percent) and Madrid ($98, down 24 percent), dramatically lower prices are observed in European cities, Oslo ($181, down 24 percent) and Brussels ($124, down 21 percent) from June 2013. Travelers to Munich pay 21 percent less ($161) for a hotel room than they did last month ($203), while hotel prices in Stockholm (July 2013: $191) and Paris (July 2013: 175 euros) are down 20 percent from June.  The cheapest holiday stays in Europe are found in Zaragoza ($70), Warsaw ($79), Seville ($107) and Granada ($82), and Athens ($91).

Hotel deals in Scandinavia
July hotel rates in Northern Europe reach their lowest point of the year. Guests in Finland pay an average $141 per night for a standard double room (the lowest average since July 2012). Travelers in Sweden pay an average $177 this month (the lowest price since January 2012), while in Norway, they pay an average $190 per night (the cheapest price since July 2011). In Denmark, guests will pay an average $177, down 10 percent from the previous month.
