Michigan’s Grand Hotel adding new rooms for historic 130th anniversary season

A key factor in Grand Hotel’s presence as an iconic destination known throughout the world is the continuity that comes with three generations of ownership by the Musser family.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MICH. – Grand Hotel, located on Michigan's Mackinac Island, will open on May 4 for its 130th anniversary season, with major changes to its timeless aesthetic. This year, Grand Hotel will introduce three new Cupola Suites, bringing the count to 393 one-of-a-kind hotel rooms, each individually designed by the famed Carleton Varney, president of Dorothy Draper & Company. Additionally, Grand Hotel has completely renovated its 660-foot Front Porch, the world's longest hotel porch.

Grand Hotel is located on Mackinac Island, Michigan, where there are no motorized vehicles and the island is only accessible by ferry or airplane. Grand Hotel is a National Historic Landmark.

To complete these renovations on the seasonal hotel, all work was conducted in the winter, with materials transported by boat and horse. The three new Cupola Suites were constructed on the hotel's fourth floor, adding five dormers to Grand Hotel's iconic facade on the east end. When the fourth-floor project is completed, Grand Hotel's roofline will look very similar to when it first opened in 1887. Work on the porch renovation also occurred over the last two winters.

A key factor in Grand Hotel's presence as an iconic destination known throughout the world is the continuity that comes with three generations of ownership by the Musser family.

"This season will be the 85th season that a member of my family has owned and operated Grand Hotel," said Grand Hotel President Dan Musser, III. "That continuity of management has been a major part of maintaining the historic integrity of the hotel and the unique ambiance for which Grand Hotel is known."

Grand Hotel will host a grand 130th anniversary celebration the weekend of June 30. Guests can enjoy a presentation and question-and-answer session with Grand Hotel's historian and Dan Musser, III, to learn more about the hotel's 130-year history.

Additionally, every guest will receive a copy of "Inside Grand Hotel," a new documentary produced by Detroit Public Television that goes behind the scenes into some of the hotel's most interesting spaces, telling the stories of its owners, caretakers and dedicated employees who have kept and nurtured this National Historic Landmark for 130 years

The documentary will air in Detroit and on PBS stations throughout Michigan.

The hotel is open from the first weekend in May through the end of October.
