New Presidential Suite at The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux

The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux, located in the Unesco-protected ‘Silent City’ of Mdina in Malta has now unveiled it’s wonderful new Presidential Suite following a two-year refurbishment project.

Located on the ramparts of the Unesco-protected ‘Silent City’, the former Maltese capital of Mdina, The Xara Palace Relais & Châteaux is a former 17th-century palace surrounded by stunning baroque architecture, transformed into a luxury boutique hotel with 17 rooms and suites.

Following a thorough two-year refurbishment project, led by the Zammit Tabona family, The Xara Palace has now unveiled its developments, including the new Presidential Suite, which oozes an aura of grandeur and richness, providing comfort and fine living fit for any king or queen.

Elegantly blending modern comforts with eye-catching original features within a historical setting, the two-story Presidential Suite offers guests the most luxurious and comfortable stay in Malta. Perfect for a couple, or a family, whether it’s a special occasion or just an opportunity to indulge, the Presidential Suite justifies its status as the most opulent of The Xara Palace’s suites.  It features a fascinating selection of period pieces of furniture including a period writing table, an antique chest of drawers, an imposing gilded mirror of impressive dimensions and an antique dining table for six, providing a lavish setting for intimate private dinners. These are expertly complimented by carefully selected soft furnishings and drapes, comfortable sofas and armchairs, old lamps and original works of art.

The magical sensation of Mdina is immediately felt when one steps out onto the Presidential Suite’s balcony where one can enjoy the majestic building of The Vilhena Palace – a building which once housed the Law Courts in the time of the knights. Wooden steps up to the second level, which features original beams, very characteristic of such high ceilings, a marble clad bathroom, and an inviting bedroom, with a Swedish Hästen bed, renowned for comfort.

Other enhancements to the hotel were influenced by the comments and suggestions from previous guests, to help meet the wishes and desires of future visitors, the various upgrades included a revamp of the other rooms and suites to create light and ambient, intimate spaces which are comfortable yet traditional. The guest rooms and suites were also reconfigured to reduce the hotel's environmental impact through investment in insulation and double glazing. Underfloor heating was added to select suites owing to their positioning within the palace, and others had fireplaces incorporated for extra warmth during the winter months. Each room and suite feature stunning views and has been individually and tastefully designed with antique furniture and paintings, luxurious Parisian fabrics and king size beds, including the renowned, Swedish Hästen beds in two of the suites. Four of the suites now also feature outdoor Jacuzzis on the terrace.

Following The Xara Palace’s opening in 1999 an upmarket tourism boom resulted in 20 years of almost non-stop operation; these recent renovations were therefore welcomed. Justin Zammit Tabona, Managing Director of The Xara Palace stated, ‘We carried out these refurbishment works in order to continue to improve the guest experience and to stay aligned with our vision, which is to create unique hospitality and gastronomic experiences whilst protecting the heritage and history of the palace and the Mdina.’

The Xara Palace’s promise to guests’ centers on an impeccable attention to detail,  from the décor to the serene, unhurried pace of life at The Xara Palace, through every facet of service, setting the scene for nothing less than an exquisitely unforgettable holiday in Malta. The Xara Palace also has an outdoor pool at The Xara Lodge, situated on the outskirts of the Rabat, and offers haute cuisine including Michelin Star restaurant, the de Mondion, located into the bastion walls, with breathtaking views of the island and a casual restaurant, Trattoria AD 1530 in the Piazza, in the front of the hotel, offering casual dining in a picturesque setting.

The Xara Palace is a truly unique establishment, full of charm, character and calm for the pleasure of the discerning visitor. Whether you are after a honeymoon, a wedding, a cultural stay or simply an exclusive getaway, The Xara Palace has it all.
