In line with this year`s celebration of the 100th birthday of architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, a large exhibition will open at the Museum of Modern Art Oxford in England, featuring two of the master`s major architectural works: the Radisson SAS<.> Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark and the St. Catherine`s College in Oxford. Parts of the world`s first designer hotel will be recreated at the exhibition and it will be the first time that a Danish hotel is displayed at a foreign museum.

Astrid Bowron, curator of the exhibition, explains: We have chosen these two buildings because they stand as the most monumental displays of Arne Jacobsen`s modernism. Both of them illustrate Arne Jacobsen`s view of a building as a holistic piece of art. She continues: On the exhibition, we will also show how he left his mark on everything from the architectural framework to little details like door handles and cutlery.

The first skyscraper

To illustrate the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel, the museum has chosen to visually recreate some parts of the hotel, including a photographical projection of the lobby`s famous spiral staircase, as well as a set-up of the well-known Egg chairs. Furthermore, a video showcase invites guests into room 606, which has been preserved to the original design of 1940.

The Radisson SAS Royal Hotel is one of Arne Jacobsen`s absolute major works, both in terms of architecture and interior design. Many of his classics were born here, says Astrid Bowron. She also explains that the exhibition will host an activity section where visitors will get the opportunity to relax in an Arne Jacobsen chair and try out the famous cutlery that had been used in Stanley Kubrick`s classical movie: 2001: A Space Odyssey.
