Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam becomes the first hotel in Amsterdam to receive the EarthCheck certification

The monumental building of The Grand has been part of Amsterdam’s cultural heritage since 1578.

Hotel Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam has received the EarthCheck certificate last month. This makes the five-star luxury hotel the first hotel in Amsterdam to receive this special certification.

The monumental building of The Grand has been part of Amsterdam’s cultural heritage since 1578. Therefore, one of the biggest challenges is preserving the monumental value of the property on a daily basis while optimising the hotel’s sustainability. “We are eager to showcase that you can build an eco-friendly hotel within a monumental building without having to give up its monumental status or luxury experience,” stated by Emmy Stoel, General Manager of The Grand.

The Grand is dedicated to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions as well as supporting, employing and empowering local communities. Beyond agreeing with Accor’s environmental and ethical guidelines, the hotel strives to become a pioneer in luxurious sustainability. To illustrate, The Grand invested in a full upgrade of the HVAC installation and replacement of all hotel windows with monumental double-pane glass. The HVAC upgrade consisted of the installation of a new WKO 130-meter deep mono-well with heat pump installation, a completely new Fancoil system in the rooms and corridors, an upgrade of the Air-handling units with heat recovery systems, sustainable water boilers and sustainable insulation of the hotel roof. In addition, The Grand serves its guests filtered Amsterdam tap water, guests can shower with sustainable products from Diptyque and the extensive breakfast consists amongst other things of honey and herbs from their own roof garden

Also, in terms of diversity and inclusion, The Grand is committed to bringing its staff, guests and community together through The Grand’s Social Engagement Project. The Grand works closely together with local and national charity organizations and participates in projects focused on education, waste, food, poverty, lonely senior citizens and more. For example, The Grand hosts the Pride Cocktail every year during Pride Amsterdam, the staff participates in various Serve the City activities every month and the hotel donates to, among others, the Food Bank, ‘De Regenboog Groep’, the local first responders, waste collectors and several care homes.

The Grand is the first hotel in Amsterdam to receive the certification from EarthCheck. The Grand is also the first hotel within the Sofitel Legend group of Accor. The six Sofitel Legend hotels worldwide are legendary addresses with monumental status and historical backstories. The fact that The Grand shows that these legendary hotels can also be progressive in terms of sustainability makes this recognition extra special.
