Following the announcement of the acquisition of the Taittinger Group by Starwood Capital Group LLC and the authorisation granted by the European Commission to the acquisition of the Le Meridien chain by a company constituted by the Lehman Brothers bank and Starwood Capital Group, the French and European ranking of hotel groups have been modified by the control of management of the brands by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, a sister company of Starwood Capital.
The integration of brands previously operated by Louvre Hotels (Premiere Classe, Campanile, Kyriad, Bleu Marine, Concorde) and Le Meridien in the portfolio of the American group, Starwood, has significantly modified established positions. Only marginally present in France until now (with only 4 hotels before the acquisition of Louvre Hotels and Le Meridien), the group thus constituted knocked down the second place in terms of hotel groups. In Europe, a gain of 11 places would also place the American group in second place behind Accor, whose lead remains quite wide (120,040 rooms versus 54,889 for Starwood).
At the global level, the gain is less spectacular, though nonetheless covers more than 100,000 rooms. Starwood would rise by one place to 7th place throughout the world in a ranking where only the British InterContinental Hotels Group and the French Accor defend European colours from the American armada.
