Thanksgiving hotel deals across US

When comparing hotel rates over Thanksgiving (November 28th-30th) to an earlier period in the month over the same days of the week, prices are down considerably, showing us that Thanksgiving is a good time to find hotel deals. Prices dropped 20% in Denver for the holiday, 22% in Boston, 24% in Columbus, 24% in Philadelphia, and 19% in Washington D.C.

DUSSELDORF, GERMANY – The average hotel price in the US is $166 this year, the lowest it has been all year, down 5% from last year’s national average of $175 and down 9% from last month’s national average of $182. As Americans head home to celebrate Thanksgiving with family, hotel prices are down in many major US cities, (besides New York and Las Vegas, which are popular destinations over the November holiday). US cities are seeing healthy year-on-year hotel price growth, with San Francisco topping the list at 25%. These are the findings of the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) prepared each month by hotel search trivago.com.

Thanksgiving hotel deals found across US

How about a turkey out of the house this year? As most Americans are home with family, many US destinations (outside of big tourist hotspots for the holiday such as NYC and Las Vegas) see decreased hotel prices.

However, prices are up in Chicago (9%), Las Vegas (15%), and New York (16%).

Hotels prices across US see strong year-over-year growth in cities
Of the top 25 US cities surveyed in the tHPI, 15 saw annual price increases. The most significant growth was present in San Francisco (of little surprise, perhaps, as hotel prices there have been increasing rapidly for the past many months). The average price for a room in the City by the Bay will cost travelers $239 this month, when last November, they were paying only $191. Houston saw a 14% price increase over the year, while Dallas and Denver each saw 13% growth. Midwestern cities Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit were of the few on the map that saw annual decreases, of 7%, 9%, and 5%, respectively.

November hotel savings across the US
As we head into winter, hotel prices are cooling with the temperatures. Those hoping to save money on hotel rooms should not overlook domestic travel during the month of November, as the average nightly rates are down across the country. The best November savings are found in San Francisco, Boston, Minneapolis, and Washington D.C.

In San Francisco, hotel prices have dropped 27% (from $327 to $239), in Boston they have dropped 30% from last month’s average of $408 (when The World Series was taking place) to $286 this November, and in Minneapolis prices have dropped 32% (from $231 last month to $156 this month). Room rates in the nation’s capital dropped by $100 (31%) from October ($327) to November ($227). Chicago, Philadelphia, and Salt Lake City all saw month-on-month price decreases over 15%. All top US cities listed in the tHPI see cheaper hotel prices this month except for Miami—where rates have increased by a paltry 3%.

Prices down in Italy and Germany
Travelers to Europe will find lower prices in many popular destinations this month. Italian cities see the most significant drops with prices down 46% this month in Venice ($183), 32% in Rome ($148) and 32% in Florence ($151). Germany also sees prices drop significantly as it prepares to welcome visitors for next month’s celebrated Christmas Markets. Munich ($178, down 24%) and Cologne ($158, down 23%) show considerably lower prices than the previous month.
