UK hotel prices below average in June

In comparison to May, hotel prices in Europe have decreased on average by seven percent. The tHPI (trivago Hotel Price Index) which is published monthly by the hotel price comparison trivago.co.uk shows that an overnight stay in a standard double room costs on average 100 pounds in European cities this June. Hotel prices in the United Kingdom are seven percent below the European average at 93 pounds.

London, June 5th 2009. Despite the start of the holiday season Brits can still find good deals close to home in England. The price of a standard double room in Manchester has decreased by 22 percent to 78 pounds, compared with 143 pounds in June 2008. Hotel prices are also more favourable in Blackpool; the price for a double room has decreased by 19 percent from May to June (60 pounds). The most expensive cities in England are London (131 pounds), Oxford (111 pounds) and Newcastle (104 pounds), the cheapest cities in England that offer affordable alternative weekend breaks are Coventry (71 pounds), Sheffield (70 pounds) and Blackpool (60 pounds).

In comparison to England, hotel prices in Edinburgh have decreased by 25 percent to 110 pounds, in Aberdeen the June average is 106 pounds. The price of a standard double room in Glasgow has decreased by 9 percent to 85 pounds, compared with 93 pounds last summer. An overnight stay in the Welsh capital is very affordable this June at 88 pound. Belfast is also a good option for June with hotel accommodation prices averaging 98 pounds.

Outside of the United Kingdom other European countries have also seen a decrease in average hotel prices, but to a lesser extent. The price for a double room in Barcelona is 102 pounds, 18 percent less than in June 2008 (126 pounds). The price of a standard double room in Madrid is 88 pounds in June (108 pounds this time last year). The most expensive European city in June continues to be Geneva (186 pounds for a double room). The cheapest city to visit is Granada (64 pounds).

The trivago.co.uk hotel price index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for the most popular European cities on trivago. The average prices for a standard double room are calculated on the basis of 40,000 daily price inquiries for overnight hotel stay generated through the trivago hotel price comparison. trivago stores all hotel enquiries for each month and therefore gives an overview of hotel accommodation prices for the upcoming month.
