Explore Minnesota Tourism has just awarded more than $610,000 in grants to over 90 nonprofit tourism promotion organizations for marketing projects to draw visitors to communities across the state. In addition, more than $22,000 was granted to 12 groups promoting designated Minnesota Scenic Byways.

Projects supported by these funds include advertising and promotions in 2006 to attract travelers, group tours and meeting and convention business. Communities provide 60 percent of the cost of these marketing programs, or close to $1 million in additional funding leveraged by these grants. Explore Minnesota partnership grants are awarded annually.

These public/private partnerships allow communities to expand their marketing, and in many cases, to reach new markets, explained John Edman, director of Explore Minnesota Tourism, the state’s tourism promotion office.

Through creative and targeted promotions, local and regional organizations effectively get out the Explore Minnesota message. These local initiatives are key to attracting travelers to destinations across our state.

Recipients include convention and visitors bureaus, chambers of commerce, lodging and resort associations and other community tourism organizations. The scenic byway grants are a new program that benefits many communities that are working cooperatively to promote their area byway, including many of the 22 official scenic byways in the state.

Tourism is a $9 billion industry in Minnesota, supporting 235,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector statewide.
