SOUFRIERE, ST. LUCIA – The Saint Lucia Cross of the order of St. Lucia is awarded to an individual of distinguished service that has contributed greatly to the national development of the island. This year, the prestigious honor is bestowed upon Nick Troubetzkoy, architect of Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet resorts, for his continued dedication to the advancement of St. Lucia and impactful, regenerative community efforts.
From the moment Troubetzkoy purchased Anse Chastanet and became a hotel owner in 1974, he was determined to create an extraordinary and unconventional experience, integrating genuine St. Lucian beauty into every aspect of his designs. Anse Chastanet and Jade Mountain are Troubetzkoy’s love letters to the natural beauty and culture of St. Lucia, with a pioneering, open-air suite design that incorporates elements of the island’s lush tropical greenery. A cornucopia of organic architecture, Jade Mountain immerses guests in nature, connecting them with their surroundings and inviting them to participate in meaningful interactions with the island as a whole. Jade Mountain’s unique elements have attracted unparalleled attention to the community over the years, through press coverage and the interest of new visitors and investors alike; the resort was recently featured on BBC’s Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby and was named one of the Top 100 Hotels in the World by Travel + Leisure.
Troubetzkoy understood early on the importance of including the community in the economic benefits of his success. As one of the most prominent employers in the region, he made it his mission, along with wife and co-founder Karolin Troubetzkoy, to employ a local workforce, with 100% of the original Jade Mountain construction crew hailing from St. Lucia and 99% of current resort staff being native to the surrounding community. Jade Mountain’s furniture and furnishings were all made in St. Lucia and purchased from local suppliers, further boosting the island’s economy and supporting locally owned businesses. Today, Troubetzkoy’s resorts and on-island businesses, which include Adventure St. Lucia, Kayak St. Lucia, Bike St. Lucia, Jungle Reef Adventures, Scuba St. Lucia and Kai Belte, Kai Mer and Kai en Ciel Spas, have more than 550 employees, with the vast majority being St. Lucian nationals.
Troubetzkoy’s sense of social responsibility goes hand-in-hand with the operational philosophy of his resorts – seen through his integration of local elements as well as his understanding of the critical role that the community plays within the continued success of the resorts. In addition to his financial, charitable, and architectural contributions to the island, Troubetzkoy also regularly collaborates with community leaders and stakeholders, lending his expertise to create a prosperous Saint Lucia for all.
