Definitions of Danish design have filled countless books and newspaper articles over the last few decades, and its essence is to be found in timeless simplicity, quality materials and function. The Danish design renaissance of recent years is founded on several great names, Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner and Poul Henningsen, among them and many of their works retains presence in Copenhagen.

The profile of Copenhagen's fashion designers has increased dramatically. These days, Danish designers working both in Copenhagen and for world famous labels in Paris, London and Milan, exert a sizeable influence over the fashion industry. This creative strength, and the esteem in which Danish designers are held around the world, is also reflected in the city's wealth of designer stores and the emerging talent.

Few city's shops can match the Danish capital's for inspiration per square meter. What Copenhagen lacks in size its shopping district makes up for in diversity and quality from bargain stores to exclusive designer shops. The city's largest shopping area is centered on Europe's longest pedestrian shopping street, Strøget, and the streets that surround it. Second Hand and antique shops in Copenhagen are plenty and both serious collectors and retro shoppers can find bargains in one if the many shops, flea markets or auction houses in the city.

Along the visits of the historical Royal sites of Copenhagen, it’s also possible to include the shops and boutiques that proudly call themselves purveyors to her Majesty the Queen of Denmark. The spectrum of purveyors runs from modern Danish design over pipe makers to sweets. Members of this select group are allowed to use the Royal coat of arms or the Royal crown in conjunction with their company’s name.
