55% of travelers have been deceived by vacation home images

Booking a travel residence requires a level of trust between the traveler and the host. From the host’s side, expectations of their residents pertain to their actual stay, particularly respectful behavior and rule-following. For a traveler, it starts at the moment of booking. At the bare minimum, they hope their destination, in real life, appears how it does online.

When it comes to booking a vacation rental property, there is a level of trust required between the host and the traveler but sometimes what you see isn’t what you get. Because of this, VacationRenter surveyed over 1k people about whether or not they’ve been duped by their host and what they think makes a listing trustworthy.

Here’s what they said:

  • Nearly 55% of travelers have been misled by images of a rental property online- Gen Z were most likely
  • Over HALF of respondents stayed for the full duration of the reservation despite the rental looking different from the online images
  • Only 58% of Americans received a full refund after being deceived by images of a rental property
