A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Yet there’s one important thing you may not have considered: the cruise line you want to go with. If you don’t know where to start, this guide will help you out.

There aren’t many downsides to going on a cruise. You get an uninterrupted ocean view with some peace and quiet, lots of onboard entertainment, and the opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful locations on earth.

Sure, you may have questions about some things, like ‘what are the top things to do in Aruba on a cruise?’ or ‘what do I pack?’ But the idea of picking a destination for your cruise is pretty simple in theory.

Yet there’s one important thing you may not have considered: the cruise line you want to go with. If you don’t know where to start, this guide will help you out!

Aren't all cruise lines the same
Not exactly. Though you can expect high-quality customer service and top-of-the-range experiences on all cruise lines, you will not always get the same exact experience.

There is no single cruise line that caters to every age range, personality type, or entertainment preference. This means that you should focus on identifying exactly what you are hoping to get out of your chosen cruise line so you can make the most of every second.

Different types of cruise lines
Before you make your decision, we’d suggest drilling deep into the style and type of cruise that you want. This may include luxury, expedition, family-friendly, budget-conscious, or even a quiet cruise if you’re over a certain age.

We’ve outlined the different types of cruises below, along with relevant cruise lines, so you can check out the differences and find one that suits or appeals to you the most.

Megaresort cruises

Think Las Vegas, but afloat.

Popular megaresort cruise lines include Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and MSC Cruises. These brands operate relatively big mass-market vessels with pretty affordable starting prices. Cabins can go from anywhere between $100 and $1,000 a night.

The Royal Caribbean brand accounts for almost 20% of all worldwide cruises. Factor in the next three biggest players — MSC Cruises, Norwegian, and Carnival — and you’ve exceeded over 50% of the cruise business!

Megaresort ships feature immense deck-top entertainment options ranging from spas, bars, restaurants, casinos, and waterparks, to laser tag courses. These are best for teenagers, families, and those looking for some fun.

The size of each ship operated by these companies will vary, but the megaresorts are generally the newer vessels.

Traditional cruises
If a ship packed full of entertainment doesn’t appeal to you, you might want to consider more traditional medium-large sized cruise lines offered by Holland America, Celebrity, and Princess.

Instead of amusement parks and laser tag, you’ll have relaxing lounge and pool areas where you can embrace being at sea without the hassle. You can also expect a more classic entertainment and dining section.

These cruises are frequented by the older generation and couples. If you’re looking for a more romantic and slower cruising experience, this may be the best option.

Budget-friendly cruises
Carnival or Celebrity both offer budget-friendly cruises without losing the entertainment value offered by a megaresort. Both brands pride themselves on guaranteeing great value for money.

In addition to being inexpensive, these cruise ships tend to be more casual, and fun-focused, and, yes, can also get a bit rowdy and loud at times.

Luxurious Cruises
If you’re prepared to splurge, you may want to consider setting sail with either Regent Seven Seas Cruises or Seabourn.

Not only will the attentive staff cater to your every whim, but you’ll also be able to indulge in complimentary beverages and food, relax in high-quality suites, and even enjoy the entertainment or spas onboard.

Expedition cruises
Expedition cruise lines are a growing sector of the cruising industry. Cruise lines offering these experiences are most applicable to individuals seeking more adventure.

It’s all about getting you to places off the beaten path that tend to be unreachable unless you’re on a vessel. This includes trips to Antarctica, Svalbard, Alaska, the Caribbean, and Norway.

Some of the most notable expedition cruise lines include Silversea Cruises, Poseidon Cruises, Atlas Ocean Voyages, and Oceanwide Expeditions.

However, if you want a cruise line that offers everything in a single vessel, you might want to consider the UK-based brand P&O Cruises.

Summary
After reading all of this information, we hope you now understand how to choose the best cruise line to match your personality and intended vacation destination!

Make sure to factor in your budget, entertainment preferences, and your personality type when you are picking a cruise line. This could be the difference between enjoying and hating your voyage!
