American Airlines to begin new service between Phoenix Sky Harbor International and London Heathrow

American Airlines 777-200, Business Class.

American’s ninth destination from London to launch in March 2019 in partnership with British Airways.

American Airlines will introduce new service between London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) beginning March 31, 2019. The addition of this new flight, operated with a two-class Boeing 777-200 aircraft featuring Premium Economy, will complement existing service between London and Phoenix provided by American’s Atlantic Joint Business partner British Airways. This will be American’s first trans-Atlantic flight from PHX.

With year-round warm and sunny weather, unique desert vistas, world-class golf and spas, and the spectacular Grand Canyon nearby, Phoenix continues to grow as a popular recreational destination for international travelers. American’s new PHX-LHR service will also give Arizonans greater access to London, a world city renowned for business, history, culture, fashion and flare.

“Our trans-Atlantic partnership with British Airways continues to strengthen and provide new possibilities for both carriers and customers throughout Europe and North America,” said Vasu Raja, American’s Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning. “Our extensive networks on each side of the Atlantic are complementary and enable further long-haul expansion from both points of sale.”

American’s joint business with British Airways, Iberia and Finnair gives customers easy and seamless access to an unrivaled trans-Atlantic network of more than 140 nonstop flights between London and nearly 40 destinations across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The new PHX-LHR service will provide more than 120 onward connections from LHR with British Airways, Iberia and Finnair and from PHX to more than 80 onward destinations on American throughout North America.

“We’re really pleased our partners at American Airlines are launching this new route between two fantastic cities,” said Sean Doyle, British Airways’ Director of Network. “This new service, combined with British Airways’ daily flight between London Heathrow and Phoenix, further strengthens our Atlantic Joint Business, making our customers’ travel experience even easier and more rewarding.”

Customers in Flagship Business can look forward to lie-flat, aisle-accessible suites equipped with Bose noise-canceling headphones, celebrity chef-inspired menus and bedding designed by premium sleep product brand Casper. Premium Economy features leather seats with 38 inches of pitch, noise-reducing headphones, an enhanced food and beverage selection, and personal amenity kits. High-speed international Wi-Fi and personal inflight entertainment screens are available for every customer on board.

Next summer, American will also introduce eight additional services between the United States and Europe. All of the flights will be operated as part of the Atlantic Joint Business.

  • From Philadelphia International Airport (PHL): Daily summer seasonal service to Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland; and new summer seasonal service to Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL), Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) in Italy and Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) in Croatia
  • From Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW): Daily summer seasonal service to Dublin Airport (DUB) and Munich Airport (MUC)
  • From Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD): Daily summer seasonal service to Athens International Airport (ATH) in Greece
  • From Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT): Daily year-round service to MUC

American’s joint business partner Finnair also announced new service between Helsinki Airport (HEL) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which will begin March 31.

American’s flights will be available for sale Aug. 27.
