Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts allocates US$11m. toward Integral Coastal Management Plan

The brand has outlined various initiatives to strengthen its commitment to long-term sustainability.

MIAMI, FL – Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts – a leading all-inclusive hotel brand with properties in Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica and Spain, is reaffirming its commitment to sustainable hospitality with a US$11 million investment toward its Integral Coastal Management Plan that promotes sustainable planning and management of the territories and natural resources where the brand operates.

“In 2017, we committed to follow the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,  a blueprint created by the U.N. that aims to achieve peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future,” said Antonia del Toro, director of corporate social responsibility at Grupo Pinero at FITUR. “The Integral Coastal Management Plan is an ambitious project but a clear example of our company’s commitment to the environment, the local communities in which we operate, and society in general.”

The plan launched in 2019 and has been activated through Bahia Principe’s Living Resorts business unit, which includes hotels, residential complexes and golf courses in Mexico, Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

The project is organized into three areas:

  • The Aquatic System with initiatives like recovering coral reefs, sargassum barriers or improving biodiversity
  • The Beach-Dune System including actions such as improving beaches, waste management or the application of monitoring and warning systems
  • The Socio-Economic Area for work such as sustainable energy and water management, conservation, land use planning and the promotion of sustainable mobility

The brand also announced other initiatives at FITUR 2020, including strengthening its Healthy Company program, launched in 2006, to improve the physical, mental and social well-being of its 15,000 employees and their families, and committing to a 60% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030. At FITUR, Bahia Principe also worked toward this goal by implementing the "Changing the Effect" effort which measured the tradeshow’s carbon footprint for the first time.

Bahia Principe also developed a mobile application to register the carbon footprint people used to get to FITUR, to then offset it by planting trees at its Caribbean properties. The brand registered a total of 28,441 Lbs. of CO2, resulting in the planting of more than 1,200 native trees in the different hotel complexes.
