Backed by a £2.5 million annual investment from the City Corporation, Destination City will drive the Square Mile’s recovery from the pandemic, revitalise its streets, reinvigorate its businesses, and boost its attractiveness to talent.

Barbican Business Events, the Barbican’s in-house team working with a range of clients on realising their commercial events across the Centre’s iconic spaces, will be supporting the City of London Corporation’s resurgence as an attractive business and leisure district at IMEX America, where the international arts and conference centre will exhibit from today – 11 October.

Launched in May, the City of London Corporation’s Destination City initiative will transform the Square Mile’s leisure offer, creating a leading destination for UK and international attendees, visitors, workers, and residents to enjoy.

The City of London, also known as The Square Mile, has grown far beyond the Roman settlement that marks where the UK’s capital was founded in the 1st Century AD. It now represents a global financial powerhouse, business district and the site of some the London’s most iconic buildings and cultural attractions.

Backed by a £2.5 million annual investment from the City Corporation, Destination City will drive the Square Mile’s recovery from the pandemic, revitalise its streets, reinvigorate its businesses, and boost its attractiveness to talent.

The Barbican, as the City of London’s largest arts and learning centre and venue for business conferences is integral to these ambitious plans. Destination City will commit to:

  • A £2.5 million annual investment to boost the City’s leisure offer, building on recent cross-London campaigns and creating a leading destination for workers, residents and UK and international visitors to enjoy.
  • An exciting events programme including outdoor festivals, music, art, education, sport and wellness.
  • A new voice for tourism and leisure in the Square Mile will be established, backed by a City Envoy Network consisting of leaders from a range of sectors.
  • A new deal with partners Cornerstone and Freshwave that will activate a 5G infrastructure pilot to all mobile networks in October, with full roll out by the end of 2023. This will make the City even more accessible and better connected for visitors, workers and residents.

Jenny Waller, Head of Sales at the Barbican, who will be representing the venue at IMEX America commented: “When placed alongside the recent opening of the Elizabeth Line, which brings 1.5 million additional people to within 45 mins of the Square Mile, as well as the Barbican’s own renewal plans – the City of London and our place at the heart of it, is the perfect destination for events of all types – from corporate conferences to major association conventions.”

The Barbican will be exhibiting at IMEX America from 11 to 13 October at the Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, USA.
