Budapest Airport CEO, Jost Lammers
At the recent announcement of Budapest Airport’s resumption of direct US ties, the gateway’s CEO, Jost Lammers illustrated the airport’s impressive growth, as well as its future plans for continued success.
Budapest Airport heads to World Routes in a strong position to attract highly-desired new routes and frequencies. The annual event, this year convening at the Fira Gran Via Convention Centre in Barcelona, is an opportunity for the Hungarian gateway to meet with airlines to determine future new air services – and an ideal platform to illustrate the airport’s fantastic annual traffic growth.
As one of the fastest growing capital city airports in the EU, with an average monthly passenger traffic growth of 14% – almost double the ACI EU average – Budapest is projected to reach close to 13 million passengers in 2017. Better connected than ever before, the airport will have launched 26 new routes on its network by year-end, while next May will bring its most significant development with the resumption of direct US ties when links to New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare and Philadelphia will commence.
When discussing the World Routes attendance, the airport’s CEO, Jost Lammers explains: “The importance of Budapest’s presence at one of the largest air service development forums is paramount to our continued growth and to further enhance our route network. The team will be heading to Barcelona to encourage airlines to be part of our success, not only the airport’s but the country’s as a whole,” adds Lammers.
Alongside the airport’s superb achievements, the city itself is experiencing outstanding results and recognition, for example, its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) 2016 results showing over $10,000 more per capita than other Central and Eastern European capital. Also emerging are Budapest’s tourist attractions – hosting many great sporting events including FINA World Championships 2017, F1 Hungarian Grand Prix, Red Bull Air Race, and World Judo Championships, as well as the one of the largest music festivals in Europe, the Sziget Festival.
“Budapest is thriving and the Airline Development Team will be at World Routes to explore new opportunities which will benefit from this, particularly those of untapped markets such as China, India, US East Coast and Africa. We’ll also be targeting low-cost long-haul, and with limited competition from Hungary, this is a significant market potential,” confides Lammers.
