Catamaran vs yacht: How to find the right vessel for your travels

This article will explore the key benefits of features of both so you can make an educated decision on the perfect vessel for your lifestyle and requirements.

Planning to buy a vessel and hitting the open ocean is an exciting experience. It is a new way to see the world, it gives you the ultimate in freedom and high-quality vessels are the perfect place to entertain as well.

Many people are torn on which is the best option for them, though. Are catamarans for sale the best option? Or is purchasing a yacht the preferred option? While both vessels provide plenty of luxury and features, there are key differences that you should know before shopping for the right vessel for you.

This article will explore the key benefits of features of both so you can make an educated decision on the perfect vessel for your lifestyle and requirements.

What are the main differences between a catamaran and a yacht?
The primary difference between the two is how they are built. A yacht is often called a monohull because it has a single hull that makes contact with the water. A catamaran has two (or more) hulls that are connected together.

More hulls mean that less of the boat is underwater, which means a catamaran is capable of navigating much shallower waters than a yacht. If you are planning on fishing trips near the shore or exploring areas where there are reefs, a catamaran is the better option.

These extra hulls also mean that you will have greater maneuverability, so it is easier to pilot a catamaran through a busy marina than a yacht which makes it safer and easier to adhere to maritime regulations.

On top of the hulls, catamarans have twin engines that can be used to easily turn the vessel, even giving you a full 360-degree turning circle. Wind speed is also not going to impact a catamaran so you will always have smooth control in most conditions.

Plus, because of their width, multiple hulls, weight and resistance to strong winds, catamarans are unlikely to capsize.

Are you looking for a sailing experience or open water comfort?
This is where your lifestyle and desires on the water come into play. If you want speed and to feel the wind racing through your hair, a yacht is going to deliver a much more exhilarating experience.

Yachts have been designed to sail closer to the wind and give you a more hands-on sailing experience. If getting an adrenaline rush and cutting through the waves at high speed is what you are looking for, a yacht is likely to be your preferred option.

That is not to say that catamarans are not capable of speed, they just offer a different experience. The twin hulls mean you will have much greater stability on the water at the expense of the high speeds a yacht can deliver.

Because catamarans sit higher out of the water and generally have raised helms, you are going to enjoy greater views than you would get on a yacht. You will also capture more of those sea breezes and have greater ventilation so you are unlikely to need air-conditioning.

If a more comfortable form of transport is what you are looking for, definitely seek out a catamaran.

How much space do you require?
If you want more space in a yacht, you are going to have to pay a premium price tag and you are going to need to be able to pilot a much larger vessel.

Because of the twin hulls on a catamaran, the vessel is wider which means that all catamaran options are going to have larger living areas than a yacht. If you want to have a functional galley (kitchen) and comfortable sleeping spaces for multiple people, a catamaran is going to provide more of the creature comforts that you crave.
