Attending airlines were, among others: Aeroflot, Aer Lingus, airBaltic, Croatia Airlines, ANA, Cobalt, Air France/KLM, easyjet, Emirates,  flybe, Hahn Air Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Turkish Airlines and United.
Day 1’s Great Debate explored two issues in depth. With thought leaders heading the debates, participants were encouraged to actively contribute to the debate. Moderator was John R. Byerly, Consultant, John Byerly.

The Proposition: This House believes international airline operations will be thoroughly disrupted by 2025

  • Part l: Ownership and control rules will be discarded (with thorough disruption of the aviation system)
  • Part II: Big data and disruption – How will third parties disrupt selling travel? And the future role of Big Data in the airline system
  • Part III: What do Brexit, Trump and rising nationalism mean for aviation?
  • Part IV: How do airlines prepare for the new environment?

For the proposition that ownership and control restrictions were disrupted:
Proposer: European Aviation Club, Chairman, Rigas Doganis
Seconded: BKH Aviation, Chairman, Barry Humphreys

Against the proposition:
Against: Aviation Strategy & Concepts, Managing Director, Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus
Seconded: DVB Bank, Senior Vice President Aviation Research, Albert Muntane Casanova

Audience participation was encouraged and the audience voted on the various issues raised.

At the Powerscourt Dinner Debate, a dozen industry leaders debated the likely impact of Brexit, Trump and the Rise of Nationalism, hosted by CNN’s Anchor Richard Quest.

Day 2 featured two CEO boardroom sessions which explored what avenues airlines have to deal with in new environments. Senior airline and government executives explored the options available to management to prepare for the new marketplace.

Kevin Toland Chief Executive Officer Dublin Airport Authority acknowledged the European Commission’s role in getting approval for Norwegian’s low cost long haul flights to US, a massively disruptive event on transAtlantic routes, which have traditionally been a lucrative earner for mainline carriers.

Bobby Healy, CTO Cartrawler warned that if Google end up controlling the top of the trip-planning funnel, airlines will lose out, as Google has a monopolistic strategy. Google has customer access, customer insight and product access (with airline help). Google is serving up Google Flights for all flight search queries and penalising OTA competitors. How can airlines fight back? Provide better digital products to customers. Richard Quest suggested that it is already too late for airlines to take back control.

Ian Heywood, Global Head of Product & Marketing, Air Commerce Travelport talked about the IATA NDC (New Distribution Capability) and how it was key to the future of airline API strategies. Airlines must build APIs to reach IATA NDC end target.
