Back-seat driving doesn’t exactly have the greatest reputation. By definition, a passenger gives “unwanted” driving advice. But what if the driver is doing something so preposterous, so dangerous, and so inconsiderate that you simply have to say something?
The holidays go hand-in-hand with traveling, ridesharing, and family gatherings. But when factors like alcohol, multiple passengers, and social media come into play, chances are, you’ll encounter a distracted driver this holiday season.
We’d have to say it’s OK to back-seat drive at times, especially after talking to 1,021 passengers about the driver behaviors they’ve witnessed. Even after seeing incredibly risky behaviors, some respondents felt compelled to keep quiet. Other times, people did choose to say something to the driver, which didn’t always go smoothly. LeithCars.com found that:
- 97% of people have confronted a distracted driver while riding in their car, but less than 10% admit to confronting a ride-hail or taxi driver
- More than 1 in 3 people have witnessed a driver actively using Facebook
- 27% of people have witnessed a driver drink alcohol, yet only 12% admit to confronting them
- Baby boomers believe texting is more dangerous than drunk driving, while millennials believe the opposite.
