Australia has become one of the largest wine-producing countries and is home to numerous different wine regions offering an array of grape varieties that will please any palate. Whether you are an experienced wine connoisseur or just starting out on your wine education, an Australian wine tour allows you to experience the best wines the country has to offer and find out how they are made.

Vineyards of Australia
Australians are passionate about wine and this has seen the country becoming the tenth biggest wine consuming country in the wine, enjoying more than 530 million liters of wine every year. But this passion has also led to Australia becoming one of the biggest wine-producing countries. Australia’s vineyards cover at least 170,000 hectares across different wine regions. These include a small area in Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, Western Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. The wines and the landscapes of the regions vary dramatically throughout the country producing Australia's most popular grape varieties including, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Grenache, Riesling, Semillon, Sangiovese, and Shiraz.

Wine tasting tours in Australia
Most Australian wineries offer tours and wine tastings to the public. This provides a fantastic opportunity to speak to winemakers and learn more about the different varieties available. It’s common for wine tasters to begin by offering samples of white wine before moving on to reds, then to dessert or fortified varieties. You are welcome to taste all the varieties on offer or just the ones that specifically interest you. While encouraging sales is the main driver behind tastings, you aren’t obliged to buy anything.

Top places to visit for wine tasting
Barossa Valley has potentially the oldest living vines in the world. Located around 45 minutes from Adelaide, Barossa Valley sits within beautiful rolling hills and is famous for Riesling, a rich and dry wine. Clare Valley is nearby producing some of the richest Riesling and Eden Valley, home of a very dry Riesling. Barossa Valley is home to some of the country’s most popular wineries such as Sepppeltsfield, Jacob’s Creek, Elderton Wines and St Hugo. Margaret River produces a variety of well-known wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blends and Chardonnay. Situated in Western Australia, about three hours’ drive from Perth, it has beautiful scenery and the underground caves make it a great location to explore.

Regardless of whether you prefer a glass of white or red, and if you know your Chardonnay from your Merlot, a wine tour in the heart of Australia's winemaking region will give you a new experience on wine and may even introduce you to a new favorite.
