Discover the World confirms first St. Helena fly-drive as first flights announced

A new week-long fly-drive offers visitors the chance to explore the island’s arid coastline and lush interior, discovering rare endemic wildlife and visiting plenty of historical sites.

Tailor made travel specialist, Discover the World, is one of the first UK tour operators to launch fly drive holidays to St Helena following the recent confirmation of the island’s first scheduled flights to the new airport. The inaugural flight, operated by SA Airlink takes place on Saturday 14 October. Thereafter, the flight will operate weekly from Saturday 21 October, between St Helena and Johannesburg, with a short fuel stop in Windhoek where it conveniently connects with the SA Airlink flight to Cape Town, perfect for passengers wishing to travel to/from destination.

A new week-long fly-drive offers visitors the chance to explore the island’s arid coastline and lush interior, discovering rare endemic wildlife and visiting plenty of historical sites. Before this time, visitors could only access the island via the RMS St Helena mailboat (the world’s last working Royal Mail ship) taking 5 nights from Cape Town. The new flight means that the same journey will now take only six hours.

What’s more, the island has a significant hotel opening soon with the Mantis St. Helena, which will be St Helena’s most luxurious accommodation option; housed over three beautifully restored Georgian buildings in Jamestown. Once open, the Mantis will provide guests the ideal base from which to explore the island.

Set in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean- 2,500 miles east of Brazil and 1,210 miles west of Africa- the tiny sub-tropical island (47 square miles) is a British Overseas Territory and one of the world’s most remote inhabited islands.

The inaugural flight will take place on 14 October 2017, with the full schedule of commercial flights starting on 21 October 2017. The maximum number of passengers on board each flight will be 76 (6 business class seats and 70 economy) however Airlink plan to carry out an engine upgrade in 2018 allowing the number of passengers to increase to 87.
