Discover the World expands rail collection to add new Iberia’s Atlantic Coast Journey

European programme now offers twelve car and flight free trips great for Spring and Summer travel.

Discover the World has expanded its collection of rail journeys across Europe which combine the romance of rail travel with car-free adventures as the continent moves into spring and  the Arctic region move towards those magical midnight sun moments.

The latest journey to be added takes in Iberia’s Atlantic Coast at a slower pace allowing cultural and gastronomic highlights to be savoured while exploring the lesser known corners of Spain and Portugal’s Atlantic Coast whilst the warmer days, wildflowers and dreamy sunsets approach as spring sets in.

This latest adventure is part of a growing collection spanning the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, the Alps, and the Arctic regions of the continent.

New – Iberia’s Atlantic Coast – 14 nights
The new Iberia’s Atlantic Coast 14 night journey enables travellers to enjoy being free of a car with the added flexibility to choose to take the train on the return journey to the UK or hop on a plane exploring the less crowded Atlantic Coast of Spain and Portugal by both rail and coach.

The itinerary starts by travelling by rail from London to Bordeaux and then onwards to the Spanish border and San Sebastian before transferring to coach travel to follow the Iberian coast through the Basque Country turning south towards Porto where the journey is completed by rail to Lisbon.

Highlights include enjoying delicious seafood meals outside and wines of the Basque Country, Galicia and Asturias; a visit the Guggenheim Museum; places bathed in sunshine like the World Heritage listed old town of Oviedo, the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, Porto’s vibrant Bolhao Market and the station of Sao Bento in Lisbon.

There are 11 more journeys with spring and summer departures including classic itineraries such as the Treasures of Southern Italy,  as well as many more unusual combinations like the aptly named Europe’s Tiny Countries and Alps to the Adriatic by Rail.

And, true to Discover the World’s Nordic specialism, there are five trips which focus entirely on this area with choices such as the epic three-week Arctic Rail Odyssey perfect for making the most of the endless summer days and the midnight sun in June.

Here are some examples that are great for spring travel:

Arctic Rail Odyssey – 21 days
This fully no fly journey makes the most of the long days in Nordic Europe. From now until October this three week adventure explores much of Arctic Europe and includes the opportunity to stay in the iconic Icehotel, plus the Treehotel or the Arctic Bath, as well as visiting Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, the Norwegian Fjords and Malmö.  It includes a stunning 10 hour ride on the Nordland Railway through the Trøndelag forests and Saltfjellet mountains of Norway crossing the Arctic Circle before catching a ferry to The Lofoten Islands.

Europe’s Tiny Countries – 13 nights
Make the most of warmer weather with some of the most glamorous outdoor spots for gelato and coffee albeit in Europe’s littlest countries. This is a 13 night journey exploring the diminutive countries of Liechtenstein, San Marino, Vatican City and Monaco, all fascinating by virtue of their size as the iconic sights they boast within.

Trail of the Vikings Rail Adventure -14 nights
The buzzing waterfronts of Oslo, Gothenburg and Copenhagen come alive in summer and the hiking options, on this fortnight exploration of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, more rewarding. The journey includes a ride on the 100-year-old scenic Dovre Railway from Oslo to Trondheim, as well as the Rauma Railway and the opportunity to hike in the spectacular mountains at Åndalsnes and a visit to the mighty Trollveggen – Europe’s tallest vertical mountain wall.

Alps to the Adriatic – 14 nights
Taking in Bavarian and Alpine scenery soon to swap snow for wildflower meadows this is a great journey for spring. It explores the five countries whose history is steeped in the legacy of the Habsburg monarchy including Munich, Vienna, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice with the option to splash out on the Venice Simplon Orient Express on the return. Connecting mountain and sea this journey is rich in grand palaces and imperial finery. One day you could be watching Lipizzaner stallions strutting their stuff at Vienna’s Hofburg Palace and on another gazing at the Adriatic across Trieste’s Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia.
