Discovering Northern Texas: Six places to visit with the family

Here are a handful of the must-see destinations in this part of the state which you need to add to your itinerary ahead of your trip.

Northern Texas is a great place to visit, whether you are a solo traveler or you’ve got your family in tow. Indeed there are ample attractions for people who want to keep their kids entertained, and also have fun themselves.

With that in mind, here are a handful of the must-see destinations in this part of the state which you need to add to your itinerary ahead of your trip.

Dinosaur Valley State Park
There’s little that children love more than dinosaurs, and at this amazing park they can see the landscapes they roamed millions of years ago and even get up close and personal with the fossils of these ancient beasts.

More amazing still is the fact that there are dino tracks preserved in the bed of the river which runs through the park, and in the fall when water levels are low you can gaze upon them for yourself.

Found in one of the counties of the region which is also full of natural wonders, Dinosaur Valley State Park is perfect for camping and hiking, as well as dino hunting.

Reunion Tower
If your vacation takes you to Dallas, then a visit to the top of Reunion Tower should definitely be on the agenda.

Aside from giving you an overview of the city and its sprawling surroundings, the tower also has its own bar and restaurant, allowing you to drink and dine high up in the skyline.

Six Flags
Texas has not one but two Six Flags amusement parks, and the northernmost location is in Arlington, where you get the usual mix of electrifying roller coasters, more sedate and kid-friendly attractions, as well as all of the other entertainment amenities you could wish for.

As you’d expect, the summer can be a busy time for visiting Six Flags, as well as being a bit too hot for a lot of people, so planning a trip in the spring or fall instead makes sense for families in particular.

Dallas World Aquarium
Double down on Dallas-based attractions with a stint at the local aquarium, which is in the heart of the city and boasts a bevy of brilliant sea life that little ones will get a thrill out of seeing in the flesh.

From eight-legged octopi to razor-toothed sharks, there are aquatic creatures galore to explore, as well as birds and reptiles in separate enclosures and exhibits as well.

Lake Tawakoni
Whether you’ve got a compulsion to fish as a family, swim in the glorious waters, or simply kick back on the shores with a picnic, Lake Tawakoni can afford you all sorts of activities to suit your lifestyle.

It sits in a national park that also includes extensive woodlands, and these will hold a lot of intrigue for children who don’t mind a bit of a hike. Plus under the shade of the leaves you’ll be able to stay out of the often intense Texas sunshine.

ShangrilLlama
Located just a stone’s throw from Plano, you’ll find the delightfully bizarre and outlandish attraction of ShangriLlama, which as the name suggests is home to a large number of furry, funky-looking animals that get treated like royalty by the owners.

Families will certainly have a lot to gain from a visit, as you can book guided walking tours and get to interact with the llamas as well.

Be sure to book this attraction, and indeed all of the other visitable destinations mentioned above, well in advance of your trip. This will ensure you get a space and will avoid disappointment on the day!
