Expedia launch Holiday Value Index tool

With uncertainty of exchange rates the impacting on the cost of travelling abroad Expedia launch the Holiday Value Index to help users find the best value across 2018’s most popular destinations.

As the UK’s political climate continues to change, many families are beginning to query the financial implications this will have on their ability to travel abroad.

Enter, Expedia’s Holiday Value Index: a tool which analyses average hotel and flight prices, cost of living data, and exchange rates from 50 of the world’s most popular holiday destinations.

What’s more, the index refreshes daily with flight and hotel data, providing users with indicative average prices based on travel from three UK departure airports (MAN, LHR, LGW) and weekly stays in 3* and 4* hotels.

And, it’s easy to use: the tool allows users to filter destinations by their preferred holiday type (beach or city) and month of travel. This returns a list of destinations rated by average spending costs (from cheapest to most expensive).

Some early findings suggest:

  • Krakow is one of the cheapest year-round destinations to visit.
  • July and August are the most affordable months to visit the cities of Berlin, Prague, Rome and Vienna, as business travel ebbs.
  • It could be cheaper to go long haul: popular short-haul destinations, such as Ibiza and Marbella, often see higher prices in the summer months, while destinations like Bangkok, Phuket and Vietnam can offer better value.
  • Despite a changing political climate affecting GBP to EUR exchange rates, good value can still be found across European destinations like Malta, the Algarve and Madeira.

Patricia Hernanz – Senior Project Manager, at Expedia UK said: “With much uncertainty surrounding exchange rates and affordability of travel, we decided to try and make it easier for people to find the best value destinations in 2018.

It is important that travellers consider costs such as food and drink, along with flights and hotel costs, to ensure they pick a destination best suited for their budget – as these factors can sometimes be forgotten when booking a holiday.”
