February tHPI: Auckland and Rio de Janeiro see the biggest year-on-year drops in hotel prices

The city with the most significant month-on-month hotel price increase registered on the tHPI in February is Barcelona, where travelers will pay 99 euros on average for an overnight stay in a standard double room this month, a 24% increase compared to last month.

DUSSELDORF, GERMANY – Average hotel prices increase in February 2019 compared to January at most of the cities listed on the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), reported monthly by global hotel metasearch trivago.com 

The city with the most significant month-on-month hotel price increase registered on the tHPI in February is Barcelona, where travelers will pay 99 euros on average for an overnight stay in a standard double room this month, a 24% increase compared to last month. Delhi follows with a 21% increase compared to January, with its average hotel price now at 66 euros per night. Hotel prices in Sydney increase 20% this month compared to last, which translates into 157 euros for a standard double room per night. Also on the list of the five cities with the highest month-on-month increases in hotel prices in February is Amsterdam, where the average price for an overnight stay has risen 17% to reach 126 euros. Taipei City and Miami both register a 15% increase in the price of a standard double room per night this month compared to last to reach 92 euros and 167 euros, respectively.

The most significant month-on-month decreases in hotel prices
Of he cities listed, Auckland sees the most significant month-on-month drop in hotel prices in February, with the average overnight rate for a standard double room falling 40% to 65 euros. In second place on the list of cities with the most significant hotel price drops this month is Cairo, though its average February overnight rate of 94 euros is only 9% less compared to January’s prices. Travelers visiting Paris this month will pay on average 94 euros for a standard double room per night, or 6% less than in January. The same trend of decreased hotel prices this month compared to last also applies to Istanbul and New York City, where average hotel prices have fallen 4% in both cities to 55 euros and 130 euros per night, respectively. In both Vienna and Rome average hotel prices have dropped by 3% this month compared to January, falling to 91 euros and 74 euros, respectively.

The most significant drops in hotel prices on a year-on-year comparison
Auckland sees the biggest year-on-year hotel price drop on the tHPI for February, with an average rate this month for a standard double room of 65 euros per night representing a 57% decrease compared to February 2018. Rio de Janeiro registers a 26% decrease in its hotel prices compared to this month last year, with an average rate per night of 74 euros. With an average price of 123 euros for a standard double room per night this month, Cape Town shows a 23% year-on-year price decrease in its hotel rates. Of the cities listed, the only European city to report a year-on-year decrease in its hotel prices greater than 20% this February is Reykjavik, where the average hotel rate per night for a standard double room has dropped by 21% to 136 euros. Mumbai completes the list of the five cities with the most significant year-on-year hotel price drops this February with an average overnight price of 81 euros: a 12% decrease compared to this month last year.
