Five alternative holiday destinations for 2020

Jordan

Whatever your travel preferences, here are five alternative destinations to add to your list for 2020.

Are you looking for somewhere new to visit in 2020? While it might be easier to rely on tried and tested locations year after year, the rest of the world has never been more accessible. And with growing concerns around overtourism in popular destinations such as Venice and Santorini, perhaps it’s best to move on.

The way we travel has already changed significantly in the past decade. Wellness retreats have shot to popularity, train travel is making a comeback, while the photo-sharing app Instagram has given fame to new sites all over the globe – for better or worse.

Whatever your travel preferences, here are five alternative destinations to add to your list for 2020.

Jordan
The Arab nation of Jordan is the Middle East’s friendliest and most accessible holiday destination. Crowds flock to the archaeological site of Petra to marvel at the temples and tombs carved into pink sandstone cliffs – but the attractions don’t stop there…

Stretch your legs on the 650km-long Jordan trail, or float in the salty Dead Sea some 400 metres below sea level.

Uzbekistan
The Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan is growing as a holiday destination after recently introducing visa-free entry. Many of the top sights along the Silk Road – the ancient world’s superhighway for traders and travellers – can be found right here.

From the museums of Tashkent to the blue-tiled mosques of Samarkand and Khiva’s impeccably preserved Islamic architecture, the list goes on.

Alaska
Alaska is a celebration of nature waiting to be explored in both summer and winter. This remote region on the northwest fringes of the United States features vast national parks and epic glaciers that are almost impossible to comprehend even once you’re there.

Cruise its Inside Passage in the warmer months with its thousands of inlets and bays, or get a glimpse of the Northern Lights in winter from an uncrowded snow-topped piste.

Namibia
When most people think of safari holidays, the first place that comes to mind is usually Kenya. Yet a few thousand kilometres south, Namibia’s northwest boasts elephants, lions and black rhino – and barely a single soul around.

Despite its remote qualities however, there are now many tour companies offering comfortable camping facilities and experienced tour leaders to help you navigate this path less travelled.

Montenegro
Long in the shadow of neighbouring Croatia, Montenegro offers much of the same draws but without the crowds – yet. You’ll find lively seaside towns, medieval masterpieces and calming alpine scenery all within a three-hour flight from London.

The resorts of Porto Montenegro and Kotor and the stunning Black Lake are all serious highlights for any would-be visitors.

Do you still have a holiday-sized hole in your calendar this year? Give one of these alternative destinations a chance and see what you can find.
