Flybe survey reveals UK’s top holiday souvenirs

Over half of Britons bring back souvenirs from a short break. Fridge magnets top the list of nation’s favourite souvenirs.

New research from Flybe has revealed the nation’s top five short break souvenirs with the estimate that approximately £75m is spent overall by Britons on mementoes each year.*

The poll of 2,000 people across the UK showed that over half of Brits (51%) bring back a souvenir from a short break (one to three nights away):  women (55.9%) were 9% more likely to take home a souvenir than men (46.75%); and over 75% of adults aged 18 to 34 said they bought at least one per trip, with nearly a third of those staying connected with friends and family by purchasing a postcard.

Of all the regions, the findings also showed that Londoners love postcards more than those from any other region. Meanwhile, 18-24 years olds are the most likely to take home sweets!

The nation’s most popular mementos are:

  • Fridge magnets (26.6%)
  • Sweets (23.7%)
  • Postcards (14.95%)
  • Keyrings (13.10%)
  • Toiletries from hotel rooms (12.10%)

Roy Kinnear, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, comments: “With over 200 routes serving 15 countries and with an average flight time of just 53 minutes, Flybe offers plenty of opportunities for convenient, affordable short breaks – and our three franchise partners add to that number.

“Whether travelling to mainland Europe or ‘staycationing’ in the UK, it’s clear that many of the special memories made during a short break can be recalled by taking back a personal memento as a remembrance of the great time that was had.”

* Figure based on half of the UK adult population from ONS data aged 20+ (mid-2017) multiplied by estimated spend of £3 per souvenir purchased.
