Heading abroad? Be sure to perfect the perfect pose

Revealed: the most popular Instagram poses around the world (and the ones we find the most irritating)

Social butterflies around the world are leaving the infamous selfie behind in favour of more candid poses to fill their social media feed. The classic ‘pretending not to look’ pose has proven to be the most popular shot amongst avid Instagram users around the world, new research has revealed.

Living in a world of social media lovers, Bolsover Cruise Club carried out research into the most recognised poses across Instagram by focusing on 20 of the top tourist destinations and landmarks.

‘The pretending not to look’ pose was number one in eight famous locations including Times Square-New York, La Sagrada Familia-Barcelona, Canal Grande-Venice, and the Hollywood Sign-Los Angeles.

For those not clued up on the different looks set to assist you in becoming ‘Insta-famous’, Bolsover has differentiated the looks below:

Instagram Pose

Description

Pretending not to look

Looking into the distance pretending you haven’t seen the camera pointing directly towards you

Candid with scenic view

With your back to the camera, the photographer captures you looking out towards the scenic view

Selfie

Using the front camera, a close-up of your smiley face

Walking away from camera

You pretend you haven’t seen the photographer, who snaps the perfect shot of you walking into the distance

Kissing partners

Using the selfie to take a picture of you and your partner sharing a romantic kiss

*Please note, the ‘photographer’ can be a friend, family member, boyfriend/girlfriend or a stranger

The selfie was surprisingly beaten by the ‘candid with scenic view’ pose, which ranked second amongst the most popular poses. This pose topped the list in destinations including:

  • Blue Lagoon – Iceland
  • Burj Khalifa – Dubai
  • Duomo di Milano – Milan

Not forgetting the recognisable sea swing shot captured in Gili Trawangan (Bali), which would on average, get a person an impressive 148 likes on average per photo.

Further research revealed the selfie as the most annoying pose (34%), compared to a picture ‘showing off a landmark’ (28%) which topped the list as the all-round favourite.

Interestingly, men proved keener than women to show off romantic displays of affection, voting the ‘kissing partners’ pose as their second favourite compared to nearly a fifth of women voting it as their most annoying.

18-24-year olds were the most prude when it came to documenting their trips on Instagram, with nearly half (46%) finding the ‘kissing partner’ pose to be the most annoying compared to just 9% of 45-54-year olds.

Idyllic landmark shots were surprisingly unpopular amongst older adults, revealing a strong divide in opinion between generations. Whilst nearly a fifth of 18-24-year-olds favoured landmark pictures as their preferred photo, this compared to a mere 1% of 55-64-year olds.

Elsewhere, shockingly, 25-34-year olds were the most unconfident when sharing pictures of themselves, with more than a fifth admitting they use filters due to lack of confidence.

Michael Wilson at Bolsover Cruise Club said; “It was quite surprising to see how many males favoured the more romantic poses on holiday with females identifying the ‘kissing partner’ pose as more irritating.

“With the social media craze all around and Instagram users continually on the rise, it begs the question of what poses will dominate Instagram in the following years or whether the popular poses in this research are here to stay”.
