Here’s why you need to visit Anguilla

With a population of just 14,731, Anguilla is a fairly small place, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty.

If you’re looking for a unique and relaxing travel experience, it may be time to expand your horizons. There’s nothing wrong with a traditional destination like Mexico or The Bahamas. But a unique destination like Aguilla has at least as much to offer!

Where is Anguilla
Anguilla is a small British overseas territory in the Caribbean. It’s one of the northernmost of the Leeward Islands and sits just east of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

It’s just 16 miles long and 3 miles wide at its widest point, for a total of 35 square miles. With a population of just 14,731, Anguilla is a fairly small place, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty.

Six reasons to visit
With so many other Caribbean islands to choose from, why should Anguilla be at or near the top of your list? Here are half a dozen compelling reasons to go there.

1. Beautiful beaches
If you want to be in the middle of all the action all the time, you might want to try a different island. But if you want to truly relax and unwind, you’ll love the gorgeous beaches of Anguilla.

During the low season, there are very few visitors. This means you basically get your own private beach.

At times, you’ll have 100 yards of white beach and clear water all to yourself. (And this can even happen during the high season, depending on where you go on the island.)

Key spots to catch some rays include Rendezvous Bay, which is perfect for strolling along the glittering white sands and trying out the colorful beach bars along the way. The secluded Little Bay is better “if picturesque romance is more your thing,” one travel blogger writes. “With 33 beaches to choose from in just 35 square miles of island you’re bound to find a favorite.”

Anguilla truly is a one-of-a-kind beach destination. And though you can find gorgeous photographs of these locations, they don’t do them justice. You have to see these beaches in person.

2. Amazing food
If you’re a foodie, prepare to have your taste buds overwhelmed in flavor. Anguilla is probably the most underrated food scene in all the Caribbean.

Despite having fewer than 15,000 residents, the island boasts more than 100 restaurants. You’ll find plenty of seafood spots, as well as several farm-to-table dining specialists.

3. World-class resorts
The food and beaches might be underrated, but if you speak to any travel experts, they’ll be quick to praise the world-class resorts that are situated in Anguilla.

One of the most renowned is Belmond Cap Juluca. It just reopened after a $22 million investment in improvements – and every penny shows!

You’ll find crystal-clear pools, fine dining, stocked bars, and plenty of outdoor activities (from basketball and beach volleyball to tennis). It’s truly a must-visit resort if you’re looking for good food, luxurious rooms, and access to the best beaches the island has to offer.

4. Water sports
Unlike other nearby islands that see massive crowds during the high season, Anguilla’s laid-back atmosphere and small groups of visitors make it ideal for water sports. Whether you enjoy paddleboarding, kiteboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, scuba diving, or even jet skiing, the ocean is your playground in Anguilla.

5. Music festivals
The island might be quiet and laid-back for most of the year, but it has a thriving music scene during certain weekends. For example, the annual reggae festival, Moonsplash, takes place each March or April.

It’s like an ultra-relaxed version of Coachella (without the pretense). This festival has attracted bigger acts each year it’s been held.

6. Amazing hiking
It’s not all about beaches in Anguilla. There’s also plenty of good hiking. Crocus Hill, for example, stands 240 feet above sea level and gives you gorgeous views of the entire island.

It’s conveniently located near The Valley (the island’s capital). There’s also a variety of other hikes, like the 4.5-mile LImestone Bay Trail.

Plan your trip to Anguilla
Anguilla might not get the same hype as other islands or tropical destinations such Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, or the Virgin Islands. But it’s arguably just as beautiful and still has plenty to offer visitors. Consider planning your trip here as soon as possible!
