The lobby’s full-height windows offer the ideal indoor relaxation spot with uninterrupted views onto land and sea, and of course a view of the lighthouse itself.

Following an extensive renovation, the 30-bedroom Hotel am Leuchtturm on the Baltic coast in Warnemunde, Germany, shines again in a new light with a classic-meets-modern boutique interior design concept by JOI-Design. Guests are welcomed into fresh, vivid and friendly open spaces that radiate positivity. With a particular focus on lightness inspired by the hotel’s natural surroundings, the designers have evolved the hotel’s classic structure with avant-garde design elements and maritime details into naturally-flowing contemporary interiors.

The design vision for the public spaces was to create a “home away from home” and the hotel’s local character has been woven in as an integral part of this concept. Guests can enjoy an effortless eye for detail with lots of individual accessories in matching colours designed to pique interest and encourage observation and immersion into the interiors. A blue and white primary colour palette contrasts with elegant, understated grey-stained surfaces which are in turn surrounded by contemporary artworks from local artists bringing the intended authentic and homely style further alive.

A number of surprising, lighthearted details have been playfully integrated into the design, for instance, a Chinese dragon features in public bathroom sinks. Although unconnected to the Baltic Sea itself, the blue and white colours manage to “maritimise” the figure. Other whimsical design features include small, eye-catching pictures, flowers, sculptures and books.

The lobby’s full-height windows offer the ideal indoor relaxation spot with uninterrupted views onto land and sea, and of course a view of the lighthouse itself. In this atmosphere even a rainy day won’t dampen guests’ spirits.

A circular glass fireplace and an imposing library lend the ambience of a private living room to the lounge area where dimmable ceiling lights are adjusted according to the time of day or individual mood requirements. Open views can be enjoyed from here and an adjoining elegant breakfast room that due to flexible seating can easily be converted into a meeting room or event space.

The “Hotel am Leuchtturm” is open to day guests and offers a welcoming, accessible atmosphere to those coming in from a long beach walk and wishing to warm up over a cup of hot chocolate or enjoy a hand-brewed beer from the nearby Marlow brewery.

A classically-designed stairwell with wrought-iron embellishments leads to the bedroom corridors with their historical photographs of ladies on the beach from a bygone era.  The rooms offer stunning views of the beach and promenade and have an understated, relaxing elegance.

Natural and authentic materials are featured to create an instant feel-good atmosphere. This owner-managed boutique hotel has many different, individual details that charmingly highlight its local character.

Complemented by highly-personalised service, guests are able to enjoy intimate, sympathetic and luxurious surroundings with a delightful sense of place.
