It is, of course, irrefutably linked to the wider holiday sector, but even without the influence of international travel, the sunglasses industry still has the potential to thrive. That’s because sunglasses are no longer a mere vacation essential, but also (increasingly) a style accessory too.

According to figures from Statista, the sunglasses market is currently worth an astonishing $20,370 million per year. This is a figure that’s expected to grow by around 5.5 percent per annum by 2023, putting it on a par with many of the most major fashion industries in the world.

It is, of course, irrefutably linked to the wider holiday sector, but even without the influence of international travel, the sunglasses industry still has the potential to thrive. That’s because sunglasses are no longer a mere vacation essential, but also (increasingly) a style accessory too.

We take a look at some of the factors that have influenced this exponential growth and how the travel industry is capitalizing on it.

A holiday essential
For regular holiday goers, sunglasses are a must-have piece of luggage. A vital accessory to protect eyes against blazing sunlight and warmer climes, their sales naturally rise in response to fluctuations in the wider vacation industry.

This means that when the economy is thriving and people are travelling, sales tend to soar. This is a reality that many of those working in the hospitality and travel industries are familiar with, and indeed, for these individuals, these items are not only a personal essential, but represent a professional opportunity too.

For pilots, tour guides, and many more who work around the globe, a good pair of sunglasses is a vital part of their uniform. Protecting eyes from glare, they’re an important piece of kit for preventing strain-related headaches and improving vision in bright and sunny climes.

More than this, however, they provide a prime opportunity for upselling. That’s because they’re not only essential for those who work within the travel sector, but for their clientele too, with many tourists viewing misplaced glasses as a holiday disaster.

An opportunity for upselling
The issues related to not having sunglasses on holiday are manifold: blinding sunlight, sensitive eyes, and the resultant headaches that go with the two. For this reason, many tourists dread losing their favorite pair of shades in the middle of their vacation.

What they want is an easy and convenient way to replace them, and this is something those working within the travel sector can deliver by purchasing a selection in advance and then selling them on at a profit.

The cleverest way to do this is by ensuring that there is some degree of variety available. Indeed, one only has to look at a successful online prescription sunglasses retailer to understand the breadth of options that are commonly on offer, from prescription through to sports glasses.

With this in mind, the greatest number of opportunities are opened up by stocking a selection on-site, whether at a shop, excursion center, or even a hotel, so that those wanting sunglasses quickly can find what they need and purchase these.

Already worth over $20,370 million per year, sunglasses are an incredibly lucrative industry, and one that the travel sector can undoubtedly tap into in order to create their own profitable sideline. Is this an option that would work well alongside your endeavor?
