How to modernize your fireplace on a budget

Are you ready to get going on your fireplace upgrade and redesign? Our tips can help you transforms your old fireplace into the centerpiece of your living room design.

The weather is cooling and winter is approaching. If you’re looking for a fireplace remodel idea that doesn’t break the bank, have no fear. You can make several upgrades to your fireplace that will transform the space and keep you warm!

Add a bit of color
The days of bright red fireplaces and oak wall paneling are in the past. Today, cool, crisp, light paint colors in the white and gray realm are a hit. That’s right: Painting and even whitewashing your fireplace’s brick is popular and is here to stay.

Replace the brick with stone
Old-school brick looks dingy and worn and doesn’t do much for your living room. Forget about brick. Instead, create a new focal point in your space with stone. There are all kinds of stone options available that are affordable and will make your family room look new again.

Build a mantel
It is easy and affordable to add or upgrade your mantel. A new mantel adds visual appeal and focuses on your fireplace, almost making it its own art piece. Also, having a fireplace mantel is helpful from a functional perspective. A mantel offers protection and storage to the area over your fireplace. It also can prevent heat from damaging your walls, a wall-mounted TV, and other heirlooms.

Build outside the box
Sometimes you know to think outside the firebox when changing your fireplace. Think about adding appealing design elements over and around the fireplace, such as built-in bookcases.

Add accessories
Your fireplace doesn’t need to be just the mantle. After all, the mantle is there for a reason, isn’t it? Add some attractive accessories that reflect your good taste.

Perhaps a big mirror over your fireplace? Or a bloom of flowers from the garden? How about a firescreen with attractive embellishments? There are so many possibilities. And they do not have to cost a lot.

And the nice thing about accessories is you can always change them. Feel free to change then with the seasons or holidays.

Tile the hearth
Mantels come and mantels go. But it’s the hearth that stays. It is a decorative buffer between the fire and your floor. Consider adding a splash of color with some new tiles. You can transform the look of the fireplace and room with just a few hours of laying tile.

Think about art tile
The nice thing about artisanal tile is that it is imperfect. Each piece was glazed by hand, so no two pieces look the same. It is excellent to use them as accents with standard subway tiles. Or, mix a handful of artisanal tile with regular squares to make your fireplace come to life.

Put in a granite-slab surround and ditch the mantel
A stained hearth, accumulated soot, and chipped bricks can make your fireplace look old and drab. How about replacing the hearth and surround with a granite-slab surround or stone and ceramic tiles? This change can make a massive difference in how your fireplace looks.

Put in a gas fireplace
How about a roaring fire on a cold winter night that needs no wood, tending, or cleanup? That is what you can have with a modern gas fireplace.

The days of pathetic blue flames and lame-looking fake logs are gone. Modern gas fireplaces look more realistic with embers glowing red and impressive orange-yellow flames that flicker and dance around ceramic-fiber logs that are molded from real wood.
