How to stay active when traveling abroad

If you are on vacation abroad, you should be having the time of your life! Make sure you are taking good care of yourself, and try to get physical activity in so you can feel your best no matter how much sitting is involved.

Trips abroad can be some of the most active travel you will ever experience. Seeing all the sights requires an awful lot of walking, and many of the best cities to visit in the world are not built on flat land.

Depending on the kind of trip you take, however, there may be more sitting than you are used to. Long flights and bus tours will cramp your legs, performances and concerts can have you sitting for hours, and tiny hotel rooms are not the greatest for getting a morning workout in. Not to mention that a bunch of walking may make your feet sore, but you won’t be getting any cardio in on a sightseeing walk.

Not to worry, though, because we’ve got some advice that will help you find ways to keep moving, get your heart pumping, and keep you feeling good despite jet lag and a travel diet full of sodium and sugar.

Take care of stiff muscles and sore joints
Soreness from sitting is one of the biggest barriers to being active when you’re traveling abroad. After a 15 hour flight, the last thing you want to do is work out. It’s important to get yourself moving again as soon as possible, however, or you may start to tighten up even more. Sitting for long periods of time even makes you vulnerable to blood clots in your legs.

Stimulate blood flow, help your muscles relax, and combat inflammation with CBD cream. When you massage in just a bit of CBD cream like the kind that Evn CBD makes, you get fast relief because you are targeting specific muscle groups and getting a dose of healing CBD straight to them. Boost the effectiveness even more by taking CBD gummies* if they are legal in the country to which you are traveling.

*Note: Check the laws in the countries to which you are traveling to ensure that your CBD products are legal before you board your plane. CBD topicals are generally fine just about anywhere, but ingestible CBD has some strict restrictions in most Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

Use an app to find a great running route
If you like to run and you are itching to get some cardio in while traveling, then use an app to find the perfect route. Some apps allow you to customize for difficulty, and you can find routes that will take you to the best sites in your area.

When in an unfamiliar area, it is always a good idea to take extra precautions to ensure your safety. Don’t forget to let your traveling partners know where you are headed and how long you intend to be—and make sure you take your cell phone.

Take a class at a gym or studio
Taking an exercise class is a great way to meet new people, learning new techniques and moves. Taking an exercise class when traveling abroad takes everything to a whole new level. It will give you an opportunity to see things like a local, meeting people who will give you pointers on how to do better squats and the best places to eat.

You may be able to get a discounted rate on the cost of a single class or two because you are traveling; and you could come away with a whole new perspective on the same exercise routine you have been practicing for years.

Stay hydrated
When you are out of your normal routine, you may forget to drink the same amount of water you typically do—yet you are probably losing more than usual. Staying in hotels, being in a different environment, and eating out all make it more challenging to get all the water you need. This, however, is one of the most important things you can do to get the most out of your trip.

Depending on the time of year and region of your travel, staying hydrated could save you from heatstroke. At the very least, it will fight exhaustion and muscle cramps. As a general rule, you are already dehydrated by the time you are thirsty, so don’t use that as an indicator of how much water you should drink. Instead, figure out what your ideal intake is based on your weight and physical activity, then aim to drink at least that much every day.

Final thoughts
If you are on vacation abroad, you should be having the time of your life! Make sure you are taking good care of yourself, and try to get physical activity in so you can feel your best no matter how much sitting is involved.

Don’t stress, however, over missing a day or two of cardio if you are out and about enjoying your travel time. It will all be there waiting for you when you return home anyway.
