To explore how the top travel sites generate online traffic, Alexa, a global pioneer in the world of analytical insight, used internal records on web traffic to analyze roughly 294k unique URLs across the largest site categories.

Here's what they found:

  • The top travel sites are most likely to benefit from search engine results – 54% of the top travel sites' online traffic is generated from searches
  • Only 2.2% of the top travel sites' online traffic comes from social media
  • Air travel sites specifically benefit the most from referrals from other domains – 18.3% of their online traffic is generated from this source.
