MKV Design chronicles the chemistry of meaningful design

Design Alchemist is authored by Dominic Bradbury, a writer, journalist, lecturer and consultant specialising in architecture and design.

MKV Design is one of Europe’s most respected hospitality interior designers, recognised for its ingenious, innovative and astute contribution to world of hotels and resorts. Now, the company’s work and philosophy are the subject of a new 208-page volume published by Assouline, due to be launched in November. Entitled Design Alchemist, the book brings together an impressive array of MKV’s signature projects with reflections on the art and science of hospitality creation by Maria Vafiadis, Founder & Managing Director of MKV Design. Together, they elegantly capture the driving forces behind the firm’s 20 years of honing the luxury experience in an evolving world.

“We don’t have just one recipe for success and, of course, there are many different ingredients that we draw upon, including the location, history, heritage and setting of our projects,” says Maria. “But there has to be in the end a kind of chemistry that exists between us and the settings that we enjoy. Good design is never superficial, so there has to be content and personality; but the stories we tell also have to speak to our clients and guests. These spaces only begin to have meaning when they are experienced and enjoyed, otherwise they are just empty rooms.”

Just a few of the MKV projects profiled are: Burgenstock Resort; Sheraton Grand London Park Lane; Metropole Palace, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Belgrade; Esplanade Zagreb; Mykonos Riviera Hotel & Spa; Blue Palace, A Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa, Crete; Royal Savoy Hotel & Spa, Lausanne; Grand Hyatt Athens; Costa Navarino; and private residential work.

Design Alchemist is authored by Dominic Bradbury, a writer, journalist, lecturer and consultant specialising in architecture and design.

Maria’s final reflection sums up her enduring passion for what she and her team create and has an added poignancy at this time of so many travel restrictions: “The things that really give us hope are remembering special places and dreaming of new adventures,” she says.
