Several sessions featured conversations with technical experts who are writing standards and guidance material for software developers that bridges the regulators risk-based safety mission with industry’s software methodologies to produce certifiable software products.
EUROCAE and RTCA jointly organised the International Aviation Software Summit on June 23 and 24 with 8 live sessions and 10 on-demand sessions.
Hundreds of aviation professionals around the world including CEOs, CTOs, researchers, professors, software engineers, safety experts, certification experts and regulators joined the event for interactive discussions on the use of software in the aviation environment.
FAA and EASA executives participated in opening sessions both days and throughout the event.
“We were pleased to have participants from both FAA and EASA in several sessions during the Summit. Attendees heard from the FAA (Ali Bahrami) and EASA (Patrick Ky) how the US and European regulators are eager to work together to ensure safety levels are maintained while the new capabilities software presents are conducted into the airspace,” says Terry McVenes of RTCA.
“The event emphasised the importance of ensuring an evolution of our well proven software standard suite to allow technological advancement, virtualisation and automation. In integrating the new certification processes, regulators have to ensure the same level of safety while relying on a risk-based, performance-based and operation-centric approach supported by industry standards,” says Christian Schleifer of EUROCAE.
In Day 2’s opening session, regulators discussed adapting to the emerging industry needs and working closely with standard developing organizations to prepare the certification basis in a timely manner to foster growth, innovation and new business opportunities.
In the Expanding Rules and Regulations for New Entrants session, regulators from Brazil (ANAC), European Union (EASA), Canada (Transport Canada) and the United States (FAA) discussed the coming use of software-enabled autonomous vehicles in the air and what challenges await industry in certifying their systems and what strategies might be available for them to employ in the certification process.
