Paris, London and Tokyo are the most luxurious cities in the world

New research by Money.co.uk reveals where in the world has the most luxurious shops, restaurants and hotels. Paris, London and Tokyo have been revealed as the cities offering the most luxurious venues in the world.

New research reveals the top 20 cities around the world that offer the most luxury, from designer label stores to 5* hotels and Michelin restaurants.

The study, conducted by Money.co.uk, has analysed the number of luxury venues in a city to find out where in the world is truly the most lavish. Paris tops the list with a total of 427 Michelin-star restaurants, 108 stores from the world’s ten biggest luxury designers and offering 95 hotels with a five-star rating, the capital of France takes the crown as the world’s most luxurious city. Known as ‘The City of Light’ thanks to its illuminated boulevards and the sparkling Eiffel Tower, Paris is the perfect place for a lavish getaway, boasting more Cartier stores (24 in total) and more Michelin-star restaurants than any other city in the world. 

In second place is London, although it is home to iconic accommodation such as The Shard's Shangri-La, The Ritz and The Savoy, and has a grand total of 156 five-star hotels, the UK's capital has 372 Michelin-star restaurants compared to 427 in Paris. In third place is Tokyo, Japan which has a total of 298 award-winning meals on offer including some of the best sushi bars in the world. 

In fact, Asian cities feature the most on the top 20 list; Tokyo is third, Seoul in South Korea is fifth, Hong Kong is sixth, Shanghai is in seventh, and Singapore (best known for its luxury architecture and design) is eighth. Bangkok and Beijing round off the top 10 in ninth and tenth place respectively. Also in the top 20 is Kyoto (11th), Osaka (13th), Taiwan's Taipei (14th), and Guangzhou (18th).

Luxury in Paris – The best streets for those looking to splash out on the finest designer wares are Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré and Rue Saint Honoré. The former is home to stores of well-established luxury fashion houses, from Givenchy to Dior. If you want to see a blend of familiar luxury brands and more niche upcoming designers head to Rue Saint Honoré. If food is your passion, then Paris offers some exquisite Michelin options to treat yourself to; sample the extravagant delights at a choice of 3-star Michelin restaurant including, Pavillon Ledoyen, Arpège and Restaurant Guy Savoy. For convenient luxury, La Réserve Paris Hotel and Spa faces the Grand Palais, overlooking the Champs-Elysées, just a stone’s throw from the presidential palace.

Luxury in London – When it comes to shopping in London, you are spoilt for choice; head to Knightsbridge to explore the upscale boutique labels in Harrods followed by a stroll along Sloane Square; if you go to Covent Garden you can find all your favourite designers such as Tiffany & Co alongside luxury patisseries such as the macaron-specialist Laduree, or you could spend hours admiring the clothes and accessories in Selfridges and Liberty. If you're looking for somewhere to sleep off the shopping, you can't go wrong with The Savoy which has sat alongside the River Thames since the 1880s. 

Luxury in Tokyo – Considered to be a foodie haven, make sure to try Ginza Kojyu (awarded three Michelin stars) to experience the best multi-course menu (kaiseki)in Tokyo. If you're looking to spend your time shopping then Ginza is the district for you, offering visitors Ginza Six (a shopping mall with a rooftop terrace and art installations) which hosts all the best-known high-end designer labels. A trip to Tokyo can be made even more first-class by staying at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo which is renowned for its high-quality service since it began in 1890.

Luxury in New York – With incredible views of Central Park and the New York skyline guests looking for luxury have to stay at Mandarin Oriental New York, with floor to ceiling windows with views of iconic attractions in The Big Apple it is perfectly placed to reach the cities legendary sites. It also has direct access to the world-class shops at Columbus Circle, where you can also find acclaiming restaurants such as Per Se and Masa.

Luxury in Seoul – A city offering industry-leading transportation and awe-inspiring architecture is sure to make its way onto the most luxurious cities list. For a more relaxed stay with three-award winning restaurants and a spa at your fingertips, book into the Park Hyatt hotel located in the upscale region of Teheran-ro. Luckily for shopaholic's, Seoul isn't limited to a few shopping malls but most streets are laden with luxury designer boutiques and skincare apothecary – Myeong-dong is the must-try district to experience everything the city has to offer.
