Peru claimed vacation capital of South America for British holidaymakers

52% of holidaymakers chose Peru over other South American Countries. Bookings for Peru surpassed Brazil in 2016, despite Summer Olympics.

Holiday company RealWorld Holidays has named Peru as the go-to country of choice for holidaymakers looking to travel to South America. With 1310 bookings throughout the continent between 2011 and 2016, RealWorld has revealed that 52 per cent of those bookings are solely for Peru.

Even with the Summer Olympics taking place in Brazil last year, the Andean country managed to outsell one of the world’s sportiest, with 43 holidays booked against 53 respectively in 2016.

On May 8 it was announced that Peru’s tourism revenues had totalled $4.303 billion during 2016, representing an increase of 3.9% from the previous year.

With 4.6 million foreign tourists visiting the country in 2016, the total shows an accumulated growth of 40 per cent since 2012 according to the Lima Chamber of Commerce.

It was also revealed that the most southerly regions in the country made up 85 per cent of foreign visits by the Ministry of Foreign Commerce and Tourism in July.

Both Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu are located in the southern regions of Peru, with each enjoying millions of visitors every year.

Dan Clarke, MD at RealWorld Holidays said: "Peru was our first ever destination in South America and it's great to see it get more and more popular all the time. It's certainly a country close to our hearts, and it's no surprise to us that these new government figures show Peru winning more admirers than ever."
