Pet-Peeves on Transport: How many people hate barefeet?

What’s the bigger story these thousands of shameful passenger photos tell? What are the worst social offenses you can commit in transit? What are the most common? And what are the larger trends that this lively little Instagram account has tapped into?

Remember that time – you know the one – when you were on a plane or a bus or a train and the person beside you did something totally disgusting?

Maybe they clipped their toenails into the aisle or changed their baby on the little tray tables where we’re all supposed to eat. Maybe they let their small child throw gum in your hair or stood by as their dog escaped its carrier and pooped in the bulkhead. Or maybe they just made an epic mess, invaded your personal space with their bare feet, or forgot to shower for a few days before that flight.

Whatever the offense was, we’ve all been there. Most of us more than once. And these days one Instagram account is calling out these bad passenger behaviors.

Passenger Shaming, recently ranked as one of Rolling Stones’ top Instagram accounts, has swooped in to save the day – or at least turn those horrible passenger stories into funny anecdotes.

Featuring pictures of barefoot passengers invading others’ space with their unclad toes, ponytails draped over the seat to cover the TV screen of the passenger behind, diapers in sinks, dog poop in aisles, people taking their pants off, and even someone who managed to bring a kangaroo in cabin on a flight, the Instagram account offers hours of horrifying entertainment.

Trippy conducted an Instagram study. The report analyzes over 3000 #PassengerShaming posts, revealing which transport behaviors people hate the most. Here’s a quick look at the findings:

  • Pictures shaming messy passengers got the most Instagram love – coming in at 452 likes on average;
  • Less than 30% of inappropriately dressed passengers are on planes, but nearly 60% are on public transit;
  • Passengers didn’t seem to mind furry friends on transport, with only 7% of Instagram photos featuring a pet out of a carrier.
