Phocuswright releases lodging trends ahead of its 2022 Phocuswright Conference

The bulk of travelers appear willing to make some choices to enhance travel sustainability, with younger travelers leading the way.

At this year’s Phocuswright Conference, taking place in Arizona from November 14-17, one of the key focuses will be lodging.  In a report released ahead of the show – U.S. Consumer Travel 2022: Shopping and Booking – Phocuswright revealed that travelers were turning away from pandemic-era considerations when planning their stays, focusing more on sustainability, travel style and budget-related concerns.

Eugene Ko, Director, Marketing and Communications at Phocuswright, says: “The way travelers want to experience hotel stays is changing. People are now focusing more on travel style, sustainable decisions, and budget-related concerns. Age is also playing a significant role in influencing how shopping and booking is taking place; younger travelers are much more likely to reach outside of their comfort zones, over-index on OTA usage, and are more willing to make choices to enhance travel sustainability. Consumers are also gravitating more towards the social media accounts of people they know, rather than celebrities, when looking for hotel inspiration.”

Here are the most prominent hotel trends from the report:

  • Hotels tend to be booked through either the hotel’s website, primarily to get the best price, or via an OTA, for loyalty point accrual.
  • Lodging booking windows have lengthened somewhat since last year, when COVID-related restrictions shortened them considerably. However, they have not returned to where they were in 2019. The bulk of travelers appear willing to make some choices to enhance travel sustainability, with younger travelers leading the way.
  • Facebook and Instagram are the most common platforms that influence travel decisions, and consumers tend to gravitate toward accounts of people they know much more so than celebrities, influencers, or destinations themselves to get ideas or inspiration for trip elements/activities.
