Prague has been named as the most child friendly city in Europe in 2022

2022’s child friendly holiday destination revealed by travel experts

The six factor study, released by OVO Network, considers over 7,700 kid-friendly attractions and museums, and around 200 amusement parks in 50 European cities. The data was then combined with safety data, cleanliness data and transport costs before being weighted and ranked.

Network data

  • Prague is named as the best place for a child friendly city break with the best access to water parks, amusement parks and museums per 1,000,000 tourists and residents.
  • Helsinki and Copenhagen make up the top three with sunny Zagreb and not-so-sunny Edinburgh also featuring in the top five.
  • If a road trip is on the cards for 2022, OVO Network recommends Valencia and Seville as points A & B on the route with top 10 ratings for both.
  • Zurich and Munich named the safest place for child friendly holidays in 2022, based on crime index data.
  • If exploring areas within a city and its surrounding areas is your thing, Zagreb and Bucharest are the top two cities with the cheapest transport links.

Ranking in first place is Prague, it’s access to water and amusement parks is second to none in Europe with 15 per 1,000,000 residents and tourists. The Czech capital also ranks in first place for access to museums with no other country having more per 1,000,000 residents and tourists. Prague also has some of the safest streets in Europe and its air quality is the fourth best in the continent.

It may be a tough decision for family holidaymakers looking at a break in northern Europe. Copenhagen ranks in third place, according to the data, and Helsinki ranks in second. The two capital cities, renowned for their cultural prowess, are hotspots for museum access. Helsinki has the 13th best access and Copenhagen has the fifth.

The two cities also have some of the best safety ratings in the Europe-wide study.

Best by Datapoint
As mentioned, Prague has the best access to water parks and museums in Europe with 15 and 280 per 1,000,000 tourists and residents. The European average for those two categories is 3 and 108 per 1,000,000 tourists and residents.

The best city for child friendly attractions in Europe is Lisbon with 660 per 1,000,000 residents and tourists. Over 50% more than second place Edinburgh and 127% more than the European average. The coastal capital is a true trailblazer for things to do with kids. Athens, Dublin and Zagreb make up the top five in this particular category.

Zagreb’s transport costs are the lowest in Europe with an average one-way ticket costing the equivalent of €0.53 – way under the continent’s average of €2.13. Cities like Bucharest, Budapest and Prague also rank high for this category. At the opposite end of the category’s rank is Rotterdam where a one way ticket costs north of €4.00 – maybe best to stick to Liverpool or Rome if the Beautiful South’s travel guide is anything to listen to.

Safety is paramount when planning a friendly holiday for the family. Zurich leads the way in this category with a first place ranking – its safety index is 16 which is the lowest in the study.

Munich, Prague, Zagreb, Helsinki and Copenhagen also rank towards the top for safety. Birmingham, Marseille and Naples rank at the opposite end of the scale with crime index ratings between 58 and 60.

Finally, air quality, an under the radar consideration for holidaymakers but one which is important to consider – clean air creates a perfect ambiance for refreshing the mind whilst away. Copenhagen has the cleanest air in Europe with Edinburgh and Helsinki ranking in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Palermo, Madrid and Stockholm also feature in the top 10 for this category.
