Preparing for an expedition

Within this article, we will aim to inform, educate and provide peace of mind on what good preparation looks like when you take on the most dangerous conditions.

If you’re looking for a thrilling adventure then look no further than an expedition. These challenges involve the exploration of environments that may not be a part of everyday life. This can include:

  • Mountains
  • Deserts
  • Jungles
  • Forests
  • Rivers
  • Sea

Each of them brings its own excitement but they also possess a high amount of threat and if you aren’t properly prepared, you could get severely injured or killed. For example, Mount Everest has taken the lives of around 280 people

Within this article, we will aim to inform, educate and provide peace of mind on what good preparation looks like when you take on the most dangerous conditions.

Why do we go on expeditions
Expeditions allow humans to explore new places whilst uncovering new data and evidence for academic theories. There are a few generally accepted types of expedition. These include:

  • Scientific
  • Educational
  • Military
  • Pleasure

Whatever your reason for taking on an expedition, you’ll need proper planning to ensure your trip doesn’t end in disaster.

Importance of planning
Planning is vital to any expedition and will be the reason for your success or failure on the trip. Begin by setting out your goals. What is this expedition aiming to achieve? Is there something new you’re hoping to discover?

From here, think about what you will do to ensure you do complete that goal. Think about what you will put in place to get there e.g. a great team of fellow explorers then consider any pitfalls that may crop up along the way.

Once you’ve identified potential issues with your expedition. Come with contingencies to ensure all obstacles can be overcome. When you do this there’ll be nothing standing in your way.

Get your equipment
Your equipment will be pivotal for your success. It will ensure your research can be done and more importantly keep you alive in the process. Equipment will vary depending on the objectives of the expedition. For example, many expeditions record climate and atmospheric conditions, so taking equipment such as anemometers (like these) is a must.

Emergency supplies
Some emergencies can be planned for. How they are planned for, however, is slightly different. For example, knowing how to prevent hypothermia requires research but you can also pack supplies for other situations. This could be packing extra water, food or first aid kits for if you’re stranded on your expedition.

Packing
Now that you know exactly what you’re taking, it’s time to pack. You will require a bag that is comfortable enough to carry even when it is filled with your gear. From here, you’ll want to pack smartly and ensure everything is compact so you can fit all items in the bag.

As you can see, preparing for an expedition is simple when you follow the right steps.
